Shipping from China to Barbados, step by step
Goodhope Freight is a licensed NVOCC based in Shenzhen, registered as GD20230925153335, and has been moving cargo out of China since 2012. To Barbados we run full containers and shared containers port-to-port into the Deep Water Harbour at Bridgetown, air freight airport-to-airport into Grantley Adams International, and express parcels dispatched from our depot. Every service stops at the port, the airport or the depot. Your consignee arranges clearance and collection.
Barbados is a compact island with a single commercial container port, which makes the routing simple and the destination charges unusually transparent. The Deep Water Harbour handles the containers, Grantley Adams handles the air freight a short distance away, and the customs and excise department assesses entries through an electronic platform shared across much of the Caribbean.
The part that repays attention is the tax structure rather than the routing. Barbados applies a CARICOM tariff, an environmental levy on almost everything, and value-added tax at 17.5 per cent on a base that already includes the duty and the levy. It has also been moving its small-parcel thresholds, which is worth understanding before you send anything by courier.
At a glance
Main port: Bridgetown, the Deep Water Harbour · Main airport: Grantley Adams International (BGI) · Currency: Barbados dollar, pegged at two to one against the US dollar · Duty: CARICOM Common External Tariff, commonly 0 to 20 per cent of CIF · Environmental levy on the CIF value · Value-added tax at 17.5 per cent on the CIF value plus duty · Entries filed on ASYCUDA World · Courier and postal bands apply to personal imports, not commercial cargo
How your cargo moves: China to Barbados
Eight steps from your supplier's door to yours. The last four are the ones shaped by local rules.
- Pickup from your supplierWe collect the goods anywhere in China and bring them to our consolidation point.
- Export clearanceChina customs declaration filed and released before the goods move to the port.
- Loading and departureContainer loaded, sealed and handed to the carrier at the Chinese port.
- Main carriage with a regional relayOcean or air movement booked on the route agreed for your cargo, relayed through a Caribbean or Florida hub.
- Discharge at BridgetownContainers are worked at the Deep Water Harbour; air cargo is worked at the BGI cargo terminal.
- Entry filed on ASYCUDA WorldYour broker lodges the declaration electronically, classified under the CARICOM tariff, with the customs value taken from your invoice.
- Duty, levy and VAT assessed togetherDuty and the environmental levy are assessed on the CIF value, then VAT is applied to the duty-inclusive total and settled before release.
- Release and collectionGoods are released to your consignee, who collects from the port, the airport or the courier depot. Delivery beyond that point is arranged locally.
Duty rates, VAT rates and clearance times move, and the figure that applies to your goods is the one set for your commodity code on the day of clearance. We check the current position against your code before your goods sail and confirm it to you in writing — ask for that check when you request a quote.
Bridgetown for the containers, Grantley Adams for the air freight
Barbados concentrates its commercial freight through a single container port, the Deep Water Harbour at Bridgetown, and a single international airport, Grantley Adams, on the south of the island. That concentration is genuinely helpful: there is no ambiguity about where your container will be worked, and the inland leg is short enough that most consignees collect directly.
It also means there is no alternative routing when the port is busy. Regional feeder services connect Bridgetown to the wider Caribbean, and most cargo from China arrives on one of them rather than on a direct deep-sea call, so the relay rather than the ocean leg is what usually sets your arrival window.
Mode by volume: what works at 2 CBM, 15 CBM and 45 kg
Below roughly 15 cubic metres, a shared container is almost always the right answer, rated by volume with a weight conversion. Between 15 and 28 cubic metres the comparison between a 20GP and a per-cubic-metre rating is worth running both ways, and above that a 40GP or 40HC normally wins, particularly for furniture, fixtures and other bulky light goods.
Air freight into Grantley Adams is the sensible choice from about 45 kg when the goods are urgent, valuable relative to their weight, or tied to a fixed date. Consignments connect through Miami, Port of Spain or a European hub rather than flying direct from China. Express courier remains the fastest option for documents and samples and ends at the depot.
The tariff: CARICOM rates and the lines that sit outside them
Barbados is a full member of the Caribbean Community and applies the CARICOM Common External Tariff to goods arriving from outside the region. For most general cargo that runs between nil and 20 per cent of the CIF value. Goods originating in a CARICOM member state and certified as such enter duty-free, though the other charges still apply.
A number of lines sit deliberately outside that range as protection for local production, including motor vehicles, some fruit and vegetables, watches, jewellery and certain clothing. If your commodity falls into one of those categories, the duty is not a rounding error on the landed cost, and it should be confirmed before you commit to the order rather than after the goods arrive.
VAT at 17.5%, and the base it is charged on
Value-added tax on imports is charged at 17.5 per cent, and it is applied to the CIF value plus any duty payable. The practical consequence is that you pay tax on the tax base including the duty, not simply on the price of the goods.
Reduced and zero-rated treatments exist for a defined basket of goods, and that basket is adjusted through budget announcements rather than being fixed in stone. If you are importing food, or goods that might fall into a concession category, have your broker confirm the treatment in force at the time of entry rather than relying on a rate you were quoted last year.
The environmental levy, which applies to more or less everything
Barbados charges an environmental levy on imported goods, treated as a duty of customs and assessed on the CIF value. The standard rate applies to most goods, a higher ad valorem rate applies to goods imported in containers made of plastic, glass, metal or paperboard, and motor vehicles carry flat per-vehicle charges instead.
Because it is assessed on the CIF value, it lands on the freight and insurance as well as on the goods, and because it sits inside the base that VAT is charged on, it compounds. On a shipment with meaningful duty this is the line that most often separates an accurate landed-cost estimate from an optimistic one.
The bands that apply to courier and postal imports
Recent budget measures restructured the treatment of low-value personal imports arriving by courier and post, raising the duty- and tax-free allowance and creating an intermediate band in which goods are free of duty but still carry value-added tax. Above that band, both duty and VAT apply. Alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, firearms and a few other categories are excluded from the relief entirely.
These bands apply to imports for personal use. They are not a general allowance that commercial cargo can rely on, and the figures have been amended more than once, so treat any number you read as a figure to confirm with your broker rather than as a settled rule. We check the position in force when you book.
Why a commercial consignment does not get the personal allowance
The distinction is the purpose recorded on the entry, not the value on the invoice. A carton sent to a company, against a commercial invoice, for resale or for use in a business, is a commercial import and is assessed accordingly, whether it is worth fifty dollars or five thousand.
This is where sample programmes go wrong. If you want samples to be treated as samples, they need to be declared and valued that way at dispatch, with no resale intent, and the paperwork has to support it. Documenting them as a sale because it is easier at the time is a reliable way to hand your buyer an unexpected bill.
Packing and paperwork for a Bridgetown entry
Cargo from China into Barbados is discharged and reloaded at least once on the way, usually at a Caribbean or Florida hub, so packing needs to survive a second handling cycle. Palletise or strap wherever the commodity allows, box heavy items rather than bagging them, and protect textiles, paper goods and electronics against moisture inside the carton.
On the paperwork side, the entry is filed on ASYCUDA World and depends on a commercial invoice with specific descriptions, a packing list that matches it, the bill of lading or air waybill, and a certificate of origin where a preferential rate is claimed. A certificate of origin certified by the exporting country's customs authority is what unlocks CARICOM-origin treatment, not a commercial note on the invoice.
Timing: relay sailings, hurricane season and Crop Over
Sea freight from the main Chinese ports into Bridgetown typically runs 35 to 55 days depending on the origin port and how the regional feeder connects. Air freight connects through Miami, Port of Spain or a European hub and runs roughly 5 to 12 days terminal to terminal, with the connection rather than the distance setting the time.
Two calendars matter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and a storm anywhere along the relay route moves arrival dates. The summer festival period brings a domestic surge in imports and a tightening of local transport, so book earlier for any delivery that falls inside either window.
What we take care of, and what your broker files
We handle collection from your supplier, consolidation, export declaration, loading and main carriage to Bridgetown or to BGI. We issue the transport document, send a pre-alert with the documents attached, and check the commodity code and duty exposure on the Barbadian side while your goods are still in China.
Your consignee, usually through a licensed broker, files the entry, pays duty, levy and VAT, and collects. We do not sell door-to-door delivery to Barbados and we do not collect destination charges on the carrier's behalf. Knowing that before you quote your buyer is worth more than discovering it after.
What to settle before your first booking
Send us the commodity, the volume and weight, the pickup address in China, and where the goods will be collected in Barbados. We will come back with the mode that suits the volume, the routing including the relay, and every charge broken out as a separate line so you can compare it against any other forwarder.
If this is your first import, ask for the sequence in writing and ask us to confirm the duty, levy and VAT position against your commodity code before the goods sail. That single check is what turns a landed-cost estimate into something you can actually quote your customer.
Working examples bound for Barbados
Five shipments bought in China and delivered into Barbados, told end to end — where the order came from, how it moved, where it nearly went wrong, and how it finished. Client names are withheld at their request; the situations and the handling are what we deal with on this lane.
Cafe and rum shop fit-out, 20GP from Ningbo
The purchase. A new venue in Bridgetown had bought commercial kitchen equipment, refrigeration, glassware and bar fittings from suppliers in Ningbo and Yiwu.
The move. One 20GP, loaded at Ningbo, shipped port-to-port to the Deep Water Harbour with the consignee's broker filing the entry on arrival.
Where it nearly went wrong. Refrigeration, glassware and stainless kitchen equipment sit in different parts of the tariff and attract different rates and levies. Filed as one mixed line, the entry would have been assessed at the highest plausible rate and then argued about for a week.
How it finished. We obtained itemised invoices from both suppliers before loading and passed a clean commodity breakdown to the broker with the pre-alert. The assessment came in close to the estimate and the venue opened on its planned date.
Solar equipment, 40HC out of Shenzhen
The purchase. An installer was importing panels, inverters, mounting hardware and cabling for a commercial rooftop project.
The move. One 40HC consolidated from two suppliers, shipped port-to-port to Bridgetown, collected by the consignee's own transport from the port.
Where it nearly went wrong. Panels are bulky and fragile, mounting hardware is dense, and the two together on one invoice invite a single commodity code that fits neither. The buyer had also budgeted on the assumption that renewable equipment carried no duty.
How it finished. We split the entry into proper commodity lines, confirmed the treatment of each against the tariff before sailing, and had the panels packed to survive the relay. The duty position came back different from the buyer's assumption, and knowing it before the order was confirmed changed how they priced the job.
Retail fashion restock, 4 CBM out of Guangzhou
The purchase. A boutique was restocking seasonal clothing and accessories and had nowhere near enough volume for a container.
The move. The goods moved as a shared container out of Guangzhou and were deconsolidated for collection at Bridgetown.
Where it nearly went wrong. Clothing is one of the categories that sits outside the standard tariff range in Barbados, with protected rates well above the general band. The buyer had priced the order on a general duty assumption.
How it finished. We flagged the duty position when quoting rather than after arrival, and the buyer adjusted the order mix and the retail pricing before the goods shipped. The shipment cleared normally and the margin held.
A courier parcel reclassified on arrival
The purchase. A buyer ordered a small carton of accessories by express to test the market before placing a container order.
The move. It went by courier from our depot with a commercial invoice at full product value.
Where it nearly went wrong. The personal courier bands did not apply because the consignment was commercial, so duty, the environmental levy and 17.5 per cent VAT were all assessed. On a small carton the fixed clearance costs exceeded the value of the goods.
How it finished. We re-documented the next round as evaluation samples with no resale intent and moved the buyer onto a small consolidated sea shipment for the trial quantity. The trial then landed at a viable cost and the account converted to regular containers.
Plant room spares, air freight into Grantley Adams
The purchase. A hotel had a failed component in its plant room and needed a replacement part urgently to avoid closing floors.
The move. Air freight from China, connected through a hub, airport-to-airport into Grantley Adams, collected by the consignee from the cargo terminal.
Where it nearly went wrong. The part was dense and small, so air freight was reasonable, but the buyer had not arranged a broker for an airport clearance and assumed the carrier would deliver it to the hotel.
How it finished. We confirmed the connection and the terminal handling at booking, told the buyer in writing that they needed a broker for the airport entry, and sent the documents ahead of the flight. The part was cleared the day after arrival.

Frequently asked questions
How many days does a container take to reach Barbados?
Plan on roughly 35 to 55 days from the main Chinese ports, depending on the origin port and how the regional feeder connects. Air freight runs roughly 5 to 12 days terminal to terminal, with the connection rather than the distance setting the time.
What duty will my buyer pay on imports into Barbados?
Barbados applies the CARICOM Common External Tariff, which for most general cargo runs between nil and 20 per cent of the CIF value. Protected lines such as motor vehicles, some fruit and vegetables, watches, jewellery and certain clothing carry much higher rates. We confirm the position against your commodity code before your goods sail.
What base is the 17.5% VAT applied to?
It is applied to the CIF value plus any duty payable, so the taxable base includes the duty rather than just the price of the goods. Some goods are zero-rated or exempt, and the basket is adjusted through budget announcements, so your broker should confirm the treatment in force at the time of entry.
What is the environmental levy?
It is a charge treated as a duty of customs and assessed on the CIF value of imported goods. A standard ad valorem rate applies to most goods, a higher rate applies to goods imported in plastic, glass, metal or paperboard containers, and motor vehicles carry flat per-vehicle charges.
Is there a duty-free threshold for small parcels?
Barbados has been restructuring its thresholds for low-value personal imports arriving by courier and post, with an allowance below which nothing is charged, an intermediate band where duty is waived but VAT applies, and full assessment above that. Those bands apply to personal imports, not to commercial consignments, and the figures have been amended more than once.
Is delivery to a Barbados address included?
No. Sea freight and air freight are port-to-port and airport-to-airport, and express courier dispatch ends at the local depot. Your consignee arranges import clearance and collects the goods, and any onward delivery is arranged locally.
What paperwork does a Barbados entry require?
A commercial invoice with specific descriptions and values, a packing list that matches it, the bill of lading or air waybill, and a certificate of origin where a preferential or CARICOM-origin rate is claimed. Entries are filed electronically on ASYCUDA World.
Are lithium batteries accepted to Barbados?
Built-in and packed-with lithium batteries can be carried by sea and air subject to proper documentation and packaging. Standalone lithium batteries and other dangerous goods classes are assessed case by case and must be declared at quotation stage.
When is the busiest time to ship to Barbados?
The hurricane season runs from June to November and can move arrival dates along the relay route. The summer festival period brings a domestic surge in imports and tighter local transport. Book earlier for any delivery inside either window.
What should I send you to get a Barbados price?
The commodity and its code if you have it, the volume and weight, the pickup address in China, and where the goods will be collected. We will come back with the mode, the routing, and every charge broken out separately.
