Airline overview

Astral Aviation is a privately owned all-cargo airline registered in the Republic of Kenya, founded in November 2000 by Sanjeev Gadhia and in service since January 2001. It obtained its air operator certificate (AOC) and air service licence (ASL) from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) in 2001 and was designated as a dedicated cargo airline by the Kenyan transport authority in November 2006. It operates no scheduled passenger flights; all capacity comes from converted freighters, covering scheduled flights, charters, ACMI wet lease, sea-air transport, humanitarian relief, and mining and oil and gas project cargo.

Astral Aviation's IATA two-letter code is 8V, its ICAO three-letter code is ACP and its radio call sign is ASTRAL CARGO. The official website is astral-aviation.com. Headquarters and the main maintenance base are in Nairobi, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) as the core hub and secondary hubs or operating bases at Dubai Al Maktoum International (DWC), Johannesburg OR Tambo International (JNB) and Liege Airport (LGG) in Belgium.

For Chinese shippers, Astral Aviation is one of the few all-cargo carriers owned by an African airline and flying nonstop from Chinese gateways to Africa. Unlike belly capacity on passenger airlines, all of Astral's space is dedicated freighter space, so cargo loaded in Guangzhou, Haikou or Hong Kong flies nonstop to Nairobi or Johannesburg and connects the same day to African regional flights at the NBO and JNB hubs, reaching more than 50 points in East, Central and Southern Africa and the Middle East. That model has clear value for time-sensitive, volume-concentrated Chinese exports.

The airline is well known among African all-cargo carriers and has been named African all-cargo airline of the year several times. The fleet is built around converted Boeing 767s, with converted Boeing 737s on short intra-African sectors, giving a continuous payload ladder from 18 to 52 tons that covers both Chinese mainline bulk cargo and African regional last-leg distribution.

Cargo network toward China

Guangzhou to Nairobi freighter service

Astral Aviation opened a nonstop freighter service from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in August 2024, operated by Boeing 767 freighters, with cargo continuing to Maputo (MPM) in Mozambique after Nairobi. The route returned to regular operation in July 2026 and is one of the few freighter channels between South China and East Africa run by an African carrier. Chinese exports of electronics, textiles and apparel, household goods and e-commerce cargo can load in Guangzhou and fly nonstop to Nairobi for distribution to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and other East and Southern African markets.

Haikou via Nairobi to Johannesburg, twice weekly

In July 2026 Astral Aviation and Fly Noor Aviation Services signed a cooperation agreement during the Asian Logistics and Maritime Biennial in Shanghai to restore a twice-weekly freighter service from Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) via Nairobi to Johannesburg (JNB), operated by Boeing 767-300F aircraft with about 50 tons payload per flight. The route targets cross-border e-commerce and export processing cargo from the Hainan Free Trade Port; cargo from South China, Southwest China and Hainan can consolidate in Haikou and fly nonstop to Africa, covering both East and Southern African markets on one booking.

Scheduled Hong Kong to Dubai cargo service

Astral Aviation operates a scheduled freighter service from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) to Dubai Al Maktoum International (DWC) under flight 8V505, flying nonstop from Hong Kong to Dubai and distributing onward via DWC to the Middle East and Africa. A scheduled Nairobi to Hong Kong service (NBO-HKG) is flown by Boeing 767F once a week, carrying African exports back to China and the Asia-Pacific market. Cargo transhipped through South China and Hong Kong can enter the African network via the twin hubs of DWC and NBO.

Interline cooperation with Chinese cargo airlines

Astral Aviation has signed interline or cooperation agreements with YTO Cargo Airlines, SF Airlines, China Southern Cargo, China Airlines Cargo and Air China Cargo, so cargo from major Chinese gateways can connect to Astral's African mainline on those carriers' domestic segments. The network lets exports from Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Shenzhen enter Astral's African distribution system through Guangzhou, Haikou or Hong Kong.

Space on the China routes is sold by Astral's cargo department together with its China GSA, and Chinese shippers can check space and rates through an IATA cargo agent or through us. Schedules change with season and capacity; the carrier's confirmation on the day of booking governs.

Freighter fleet and aircraft specifications

The fleet consists of Boeing 767 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversions and Boeing 737 conversions; the airline carries no passenger belly cargo. The table lists the main types in service and their role on the China mainline and in African regional distribution.

Aircraft typeMaximum payloadHold volumeMain useRole toward China
Boeing 767-300F About 52 tons About 450 cubic metres Medium and long range widebody freighter, flying the China to Africa mainline and the Liege route Flies Haikou via Nairobi to Johannesburg twice weekly with about 50 tons payload per flight; also flies Guangzhou to Nairobi
Boeing 767-200F About 42 tons About 380 cubic metres Medium and long range widebody freighter, flying Nairobi to Dubai, Liege and major African points Flies the scheduled Nairobi to Hong Kong service, carrying two-way traffic between China and Africa
Boeing 737-400F About 18 tonnes About 130 cubic metres Narrowbody freighter, flying short sectors within East Africa and Africa After arrival in Nairobi, this aircraft carries cargo onward to Kigali, Entebbe, Juba and other East African points

The Boeing 767-300F is the main type on Astral's China mainline, with a main deck that takes PMC pallets and containers and about 50 to 52 tons payload per flight, suited to Chinese exports of e-commerce cargo, consumer electronics, textiles and apparel, and pharmaceutical cold chain products. The Boeing 737-400F mainly handles last-leg distribution from the Nairobi and Johannesburg hubs to East and Southern African points, and Chinese cargo can connect to it the same day after reaching the hub. The airline has previously operated the Boeing 747-400F, Boeing 727F, DC-9F and Fokker F27F; the fleet has since been consolidated to the Boeing 767 and Boeing 737 families to cut maintenance and training costs.

Global air network from China

Astral Aviation works from four hubs, NBO, DWC, JNB and LGG, operating scheduled flights to about 20 points and covering more than 50 destinations in Africa and the Middle East through its charter network. Chinese export cargo loaded at Guangzhou, Haikou or Hong Kong can enter African and Middle Eastern markets by the following routes.

The map takes three Chinese airports (Guangzhou, Haikou and Hong Kong) as departure nodes, shows Astral's own freighter mainlines as solid gold lines and regional routes from the NBO and DWC hubs to African and Middle Eastern points as dashed white lines. Nairobi, the core of the radial network, receives mainline cargo from China and fans it out to East, Central and Southern African points; Johannesburg handles Southern African distribution and Dubai handles transit to the Middle East and Europe. One booking covers the whole chain from a southern Chinese airport to an inland African consignee.

Cargo categories suited to Chinese exports

Astral Aviation's China to Africa freighter routes mainly serve the following export categories, which match African import demand closely.

Cross-border e-commerce and consumer electronics

Africa's e-commerce market has grown quickly in recent years. Chinese exports of smartphones, tablets, Bluetooth earphones, wearables and consumer electronic accessories are loaded at Guangzhou or Haikou, flown direct to Nairobi and Johannesburg and distributed to major African e-commerce markets such as Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. The pallet capacity of the Boeing 767 freighter suits consolidated volume shipments of e-commerce goods.

Textiles, apparel and general merchandise

China is a major source of African imports of textiles, apparel and general merchandise. Astral freighter routes carry general cargo such as clothing, footwear, bags, plastic goods, household items and small hardware; cargo is consolidated at Guangzhou or Haikou and flown to Africa, cutting 30 to 40 days against sea freight, which suits fast fashion and seasonal replenishment in Africa.

Pharmaceuticals and temperature-controlled products

Astral Aviation runs Astral Pharma, a dedicated product for pharmaceutical cargo handled to temperature requirements. Chinese exports of active ingredients, medical devices, diagnostic reagents and vaccines can be distributed from the NBO hub to East and Central African medical markets under cold-chain arrangements. The Nairobi cargo terminal has temperature-controlled storage and refrigerated handling.

Vehicle parts and industrial project cargo

Africa's automotive aftermarket and its mining and oil and gas projects have continuing demand for Chinese vehicle parts, machinery spares, pipe, valves and small equipment. Astral has long served mining and oil and gas project cargo and can carry project materials by charter and on scheduled flights.

Humanitarian relief and election materials

Humanitarian relief and elections in East Africa generate large volumes of urgent cargo. Astral Aviation runs Aid and Relief and Elections products, so Chinese exports of tents, emergency medicines, communications equipment and relief supplies can reach conflict- or disaster-affected areas quickly via NBO.

Last-mile distribution in Africa

After loading at Guangzhou or Haikou, Chinese cargo is depalletized, stored under customs supervision and cleared at the NBO and JNB hubs, then carried on by Boeing 737-400F regional freighters to East and Southern African points such as Kigali, Entebbe, Juba, Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, Harare, Maputo and Djibouti. This two-tier mainline plus regional structure means a Chinese exporter does not need an import agent in every African country; one booking covers several markets.

African exports back to China

Besides Chinese exports to Africa, Astral's scheduled Nairobi to Hong Kong freighter also carries African exports of cut flowers, coffee beans, nuts, sesame and minerals back to China and Asia-Pacific markets. Chinese importers can use the service to bring African agricultural products and raw materials to southern Chinese ports via NBO and HKG, balancing the two-way flow with Chinese exports.

Service advantages of the China to Africa freighter routes

Freighter capacity, not belly space

All Astral capacity is on converted freighters and does not depend on passenger bellies. Chinese export cargo loaded at Guangzhou, Haikou or Hong Kong flies direct to Africa, with much higher utilization and volume ceilings than passenger belly space, which suits consolidated volume shipments.

Two hubs for East and Southern Africa

Cargo reaches East and Central Africa through the Nairobi hub and Southern Africa through the Johannesburg hub. One booking distributes Chinese export cargo to more than 50 African and Middle Eastern points, reducing the connection cost of segmenting by country.

An African carrier's own operation, with controlled ground handling

Astral is a Kenyan carrier with its own ground handling teams and cargo terminal resources at NBO and JNB. Depalletizing, customs-supervised storage and regional onward carriage after arrival in Africa are controlled directly by the airline, so transfers are transparent.

Established interline links with Chinese cargo carriers

The company has partnerships with YTO Cargo Airlines, SF Airlines, China Southern Cargo, China Airlines Cargo and Air China Cargo, so cargo from Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Chengdu and other Chinese airports can connect domestically to Guangzhou, Haikou or Hong Kong and join the Africa mainline.

Dedicated cargo products

For cargo exported from China and distributed via NBO and JNB, Astral Aviation offers the following branded cargo products.

Astral Express for express cargo

For time-critical Chinese export express shipments and urgent spares, with priority loading, priority depalletizing and priority clearance connections. Urgent orders from African customers can reach major African cities within 48 hours of loading at Guangzhou or Haikou on the Astral Express channel.

Astral Protect for high-value cargo

For Chinese exports of electronics, precious metal samples, high-end watches and valuable exhibits, with monitoring throughout, segregated capacity and escort connections. Astral Protect counts and handles high-value cargo separately in a closed process, reducing loss and error at transfer points.

Astral Pharma for pharmaceutical cold chain

For Chinese exports of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biological products and diagnostic reagents, with cold-chain transport and storage to temperature requirements. The Nairobi cargo terminal has storage at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius and can handle pharmaceutical cargo compliant with the IATA Temperature Control Regulations.

Astral DGR for dangerous goods

For Chinese exports containing lithium batteries, magnetic cargo, chemicals and fuel cells, with dangerous goods declaration, packing review and capacity arrangement under the IATA DGR rules. Chinese exporters must complete the dangerous goods declaration documents before booking.

Astral Fresh for perishables

For perishable cargo, with priority handling and temperature-controlled connections. African exports of cut flowers, coffee beans and nuts can return to China and Asia-Pacific markets through the NBO and HKG channel, and Chinese perishable exports can move the other way into major African cities on the same channel.

ACMI wet lease and sea-air

Besides scheduled flights, Astral offers ACMI wet lease, supplying aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance as one package to other airlines or large shippers. The Sea-Air product feeds sea freight from Chinese coastal ports into the African air network through a Dubai or Jebel Ali transfer leg, balancing cost and transit time.

Our services on the China to Africa freighter lane

Goodhope Logistics (China) Limited (Goodhope Freight) has long handled air freight from China to East, Central and Southern Africa. For Astral Aviation freighter routes we provide the following services that shippers can use directly.

Consolidation at China ports and export customs declaration

Cargo can be delivered at Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Haikou, Hong Kong and other airports; we handle consolidation, export clearance and Astral Aviation capacity booking. Southern Chinese export cargo can be consolidated locally in Guangzhou and loaded directly, while cargo from Hainan and southwestern China can enter the HAK to JNB mainline, twice a week, through Haikou Meilan International Airport.

Dangerous goods and temperature-controlled pre-checks

For Chinese exports containing lithium batteries, magnetic cargo and chemicals, we confirm packing and declaration under the IATA DGR rules before booking; for pharmaceutical and temperature-controlled cargo we reserve temperature-controlled storage at the NBO and JNB terminals in advance, so cargo is not returned for failing handling conditions on arrival.

Arrival tracking and African distribution

Once cargo leaves the Chinese airport we track the air waybill throughout. On arrival in Nairobi or Johannesburg we help arrange clearance and African regional distribution and liaise with the local consignee and last-mile delivery. If carrier capacity changes or African customs policy shifts, we notify the shipper promptly and adjust the plan.

Annual agreements and capacity locks

For Chinese exporters and cross-border e-commerce sellers supplying Africa over the long term, we can negotiate an annual cargo agreement with Astral Aviation fixing scheduled capacity and preferential rates from Guangzhou and Haikou to NBO and JNB. In peak seasons when carrier capacity is tight, such as the African Christmas and New Year stocking season, agreement customers get priority B767F capacity.
