Airline overview

Company history and business focus

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (IATA BG, ICAO BBC, callsign BANGLADESH) is the national flag carrier of Bangladesh, founded on 4 January 1972, with headquarters at the Balaka building in Kurmitola, Dhaka, its main base at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and important operating bases at Shah Amanat International in Chittagong and Osmani International in Sylhet. The airline was corporatised in 2007 and is the largest public limited company in Bangladesh, majority owned by the government.

The airline runs both passenger and cargo operations. Passenger service uses Boeing 777-300ER, 787-8 and 787-9 widebodies on intercontinental and medium-haul routes and Boeing 737-800s with Bombardier Dash 8-400s on regional and domestic routes. On the cargo side, widebody belly capacity has long been the main source, and in 2025 the airline put an Airbus A330 freighter into scheduled service from Bangladesh to Zaragoza in Spain, giving a structure of belly capacity as the base with freighter top-up. The airline is also the designated ground handling and cargo handler at Bangladeshi airports and provides cargo handling for 48 international airlines arriving in Bangladesh.

For Chinese shippers the commercial value sits on three lines. First, direct belly capacity from Guangzhou and other Chinese points to Dhaka, with a stable schedule and capacity that can be confirmed with the carrier, suits garment trims, electronic parts, machinery components and cross-border e-commerce cargo from the Pearl and Yangtze deltas. Second, the direct Dhaka-Zaragoza cargo corridor gives Bangladeshi garment exports an air route to Europe that does not depend on road transhipment, and gives Chinese cargo transiting Bangladesh a new connection to southern Europe. Third, Dhaka's connecting ability as a South Asian hub lets cargo from China combine with Biman flights to the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia on one through waybill to more destinations.

Biman cargo products and capacity structure

Widebody belly capacity

Boeing 777-300ER and 787 aircraft provide belly capacity on the Guangzhou-Dhaka trunk route, with a fixed schedule and capacity that can be confirmed in advance, which suits routine general cargo and exports with stable transit requirements.

Freighter flights

Since 2025 an Airbus A330 freighter has operated scheduled cargo service from Bangladesh to Zaragoza in Spain, giving bulk exports such as garments direct full-pallet capacity to Europe.

Cargo charter work

Biman handles about two thousand non-scheduled cargo charters a year, including charters from China carrying cross-border e-commerce goods and industrial raw materials; each charter is confirmed per flight.

Through and transit connections

Through Dhaka, cargo from China can connect to several points in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and interline agreements with third parties extend the reach toward Central Asia.

On the capacity structure: Biman has no freighters of its own, so general cargo moves in passenger belly holds, while freighter and charter capacity is allocated per flight. A single shipment on the same flight can use main deck space plus belly space together, and the acceptable weight, volume and pallet type are assessed by the carrier at booking against aircraft type and weight and balance.

Fleet: a mix of Boeing widebodies and narrowbodies

The fleet totals 21 aircraft, all Boeing types plus the Bombardier Dash 8-400, so the type mix is uniform and maintenance is centralised. The 777-300ER is the largest aircraft, a twin-aisle widebody with a large hold that flies Dhaka to London, Manchester, Toronto, Jeddah and other long-haul points and is the main platform for widebody belly cargo; the 787-8 and 787-9 are the medium and long-haul core with composite airframes and better fuel efficiency, widely used toward China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East; the 737-800 covers short and medium regional routes and is the frequent type at Asian points such as Guangzhou; the Dash 8-400 turboprop handles domestic and short regional transport. The fleet is built around the Boeing platform, so maintenance, spare parts and crew training share one standard, which underpins schedule reliability.

Booking path through a freight forwarder

Biman has an office in China and sells cargo openly, so shippers can contact the carrier directly or book through a freight forwarder. For shippers unfamiliar with South Asian routes, letting an agent handle booking, export declaration and connections is more efficient, mainly because:

  • Capacity is easier to obtainan agent with a long-standing booking relationship with the carrier gets priority space in peak season and in the rush before holidays.
  • Quotations can be compared directlythe agent obtains prices for both direct and transit options and quotes them by weight bracket and transit time so they can be compared side by side.
  • Transit connections are checked by a person, not a systemcargo transiting Dhaka is sensitive to connection time, so the agent calculates the shortest connection from the day's timings and builds in handling margin.
  • Declaration and documents in one passexport declaration, accompanying documents, certificates of origin and proforma invoices are handled by the agent in one place, which reduces the risk of cargo being offloaded for document discrepancies.
  • Information needed for bookingCommodity, number of pieces, per-piece and total weight and dimensions, origin and destination airports, preferred departure date, and any special characteristics such as batteries or liquids.

Why choose Biman cargo

Guangzhou direct to Dhaka

Guangzhou and Dhaka are linked by a direct flight on a fixed schedule, about four hours, so cargo needs no third-country transhipment and goes through fewer loading cycles with lower risk of damage.

Capacity stability of a flag carrier

As the national flag carrier, Biman's routes are less exposed to shifts in traffic rights and policy, and schedules stay relatively stable through the year, which suits trade shippers who need long-term capacity.

Strong widebody belly capability

The 777-300ER and 787 holds are large enough for routine small and medium loose cargo and for palletised bulk, which suits garment trims, accessories and e-commerce goods.

South Asian connections

Dhaka connects to Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu and other South Asian points, so Chinese cargo can cover several South Asian markets with one transit and avoid the cost of separate sector bookings.

Freighter corridor to Europe

An Airbus A330 freighter runs scheduled service from Bangladesh to Zaragoza in Spain, giving a direct route toward southern Europe that can be built into a combined plan with cargo originating in China.

Full EU cargo certification

The airline holds EU ACC3 and RA-3 certification, so security and compliance for shipments to the EU and the UK are complete, which reduces returns and storage caused by qualification problems.

Where the strengths stop: Biman is strongest on direct China-Bangladesh traffic and on connections through Dhaka to South Asia, the Middle East and Europe. For cargo to the United States we can offer scheduled capacity with a major transpacific carrier, and the two options are quoted separately against transit and cost.

Transit connections and value-added services at Dhaka

Cargo Village and ground handling capacity at Dhaka

Biman Bangladesh Airlines runs a Cargo Village at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, where cargo is packed, marked and screened before loading. The airline is also the designated ground handler at airports across Bangladesh, handling inbound cargo for 48 international airlines. Its export warehouse handles about 210,000 tonnes a year, and the import warehouse covers about 158,000 square feet with 72 hours of free storage. The cargo terminal works 365 days a year. Once Terminal 3 at Dhaka Airport opens, terminal capacity is expected to be close to three times the present level.

Security and compliance approvals for EU traffic

Biman has held EU ACC3 and RA-3 certification since 2018, which allows it to operate cargo flights into the EU. In March 2025 the RA3 status of Osmani International Airport in Sylhet was approved by the EU and UK authorities and is valid until 2028, giving cargo flown through that airport a compliant channel into Europe. The approvals apply to cargo tendered under EU and UK security standards, and commodity types and packaging must meet the corresponding rules.

Interline agreements and capacity partnerships

Biman has signed an interline agreement with My Freighter, a freighter operator based in Tashkent, linking Central Asia through the Dhaka–Dubai–Tashkent corridor. The airline is also pursuing special prorate agreements and capacity partnerships with carriers including Turkish Airlines and Hainan Airlines, and is in talks on capacity and interline arrangements with Etihad, Emirates, British Airways, Gulf Air, KLM and Air France. These arrangements give China-origin cargo more onward options through Dhaka.

Acceptance rules for special cargo

Acceptable commodities and restrictions follow the carrier's rules. Temperature-controlled cargo, electronics containing lithium batteries, out-of-gauge pieces and dangerous goods must be declared at booking and approved by the carrier; some commodities need an appraisal report or a packaging certificate in advance. We check the commodity name, packaging and documents before quoting, so that cargo is not refused after the booking has been made.

Cargo notes: booking points for Biman Bangladesh Airlines

Airline country and operating model

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is the national flag carrier of Bangladesh, founded in 1972, with its head office and main hub in Dhaka and majority government ownership. It operates both international passenger and cargo services. Its IATA two-letter code is BG, its ICAO three-letter code is BBC and its air waybill prefix is 997.

Airports served in China

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is Biman's scheduled passenger point in China, and belly capacity on those flights can carry export cargo directly. Hong Kong, Shanghai and Wuhan have been served by non-scheduled cargo charters. Charter rotations and available capacity must be confirmed for each shipment.

Guangzhou–Dhaka schedule and timings

Since July 2025, Dhaka–Guangzhou has run three times a week, departing Monday, Thursday and Friday at 21:45 and arriving at 03:30 the next day; Guangzhou–Dhaka runs three times a week, departing Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 04:30 and arriving at 06:25. All times are local and schedules change with the season.

Range of countries reachable from China

Cargo from China can fly direct to Bangladesh and connect at Dhaka to India, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and to the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Europe is reachable via London, Manchester, Zaragoza and interline points, and North America via a connection to Toronto. Actual reach depends on the connection and capacity confirmed for the flight.

Capacity planning for general and bulk cargo

General cargo normally moves in passenger belly space and is charged on weight and volume. Bulk shipments or pallet-block bookings can request several pallet positions on the same flight, and when volume reaches a full aircraft a cargo charter can be requested per rotation. Feasibility and pricing for both routes are set by the carrier for each flight.

Suitability for US-bound traffic

Biman suits South Asia, the Middle East and Europe; the United States is not a strength of its network. For mainline China–US traffic we can book scheduled capacity with the major China–US carriers, with stable schedules and controlled cost. If cargo has to move to Bangladesh first and continue from there, we can design a segmented routing and calculate total transit time.
