Airline overview

Garuda Indonesia is the national airline of the Republic of Indonesia. Founded in 1949, it is headquartered in Jakarta and operates from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). Its IATA code is GA, its ICAO code is GIA and its website is garuda-indonesia.com. Garuda is a SkyTeam member. The fleet combines widebody and narrowbody aircraft, and the network radiates from Jakarta across the Indonesian archipelago, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, Australia and Europe.

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where air transport carries most domestic freight. From Jakarta, Garuda links the main island cities into one network, including Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan, Makassar and Manado, and connects that network to international routes. For Chinese shippers this means cargo arriving in Jakarta can continue on Garuda domestic services to inland island cities.

Bilateral trade between China and Indonesia has long been the largest in ASEAN. China exports machinery and electrical products, automotive parts, electronics, building materials, chemicals and consumer goods; Indonesia exports seafood, bird's nests, coffee, spices, coal and agricultural products. Garuda belly capacity on the direct Jakarta-Shanghai Pudong and Jakarta-Guangzhou flights supports that trade on the air corridor.

The Garuda fleet consists of Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 737-800NG, Airbus A330-200, A330-300 and A330-900neo aircraft, with about 70 to 80 in service. Widebodies fly the long-haul routes from Jakarta to China, Europe, Australia and Northeast Asia; narrowbodies fly the high-frequency domestic network across the archipelago. Average fleet age and configurations follow the renewal plan and are confirmed by the carrier on the day of booking.

Garuda has long been the dominant carrier in the Indonesian domestic market, with destinations across Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Papua. For Chinese shippers the value is that cargo reaching Jakarta can be distributed to the main island cities without changing carrier, avoiding a separate domestic booking in Jakarta.

SkyTeam membership extends the international network. Cargo shipped with Garuda can connect at Jakarta or at a Chinese gateway to other SkyTeam members and reach points in Europe, North America, South America and Africa. Chinese manufacturers with a regional base in Indonesia get a single-carrier interface for global distribution.

China contact

Garuda serves Shanghai and Guangzhou in China on scheduled direct flights and connects through SkyTeam with China Eastern and Xiamen Airlines. Shippers submit booking requests through Goodhope Freight. Goodhope Logistics (China) Limited books cargo from China to Jakarta and to destinations across the archipelago, pre-checks documents, confirms space and tracks the shipment, and works with the Garuda Jakarta cargo team on a regular basis. Route schedules and cargo conditions are also published at garuda-indonesia.com.

Interline bookings, space upgrades, heavy piece surcharges, refunds and rebookings are best submitted through Goodhope Freight, which avoids delays caused by incorrect document formats and language gaps. We hold consolidation warehouses in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen for shippers in East and South China, along with trucking to the airport. On the return leg we clear and deliver Indonesian imports such as bird's nests, coffee and seafood.

Shippers without a direct cargo agreement with Garuda spend less time working through a forwarder. Goodhope Freight combines the China leg, the Jakarta transit and the archipelago feeder booking into one trackable shipment instruction, so the shipper deals with a single contact and can aggregate monthly volumes to negotiate contract rates.

Aircraft types

Garuda flies international long-haul routes with Boeing and Airbus widebodies and the archipelago network with the Boeing 737-800. Cargo configuration by type is set out below.

Aircraft typeCargo modeMain use
Boeing 777-300ERWidebody belly capacity, tens of tonnes per flightMain type on long-haul routes from Jakarta to Europe, Australia and Northeast Asia
Airbus A330-300Widebody belly cargo, economical on long haulOne of the main types on direct flights from Jakarta to Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou and other Chinese cities
Airbus A330-200Widebody belly cargoAdditional capacity on regional long-haul routes
Airbus A330-900neoWidebody belly capacity with new-generation fuel efficiencyCore of the fleet renewal, gradually taking over international trunk routes
Boeing 737-800NGNarrowbody belly capacityHigh-frequency Jakarta feeder services to Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan and other points across the archipelago

Fleet data is compiled from the Garuda fleet page and investor relations material. Aircraft numbers and configurations follow the renewal plan and are confirmed by the carrier on the day of booking. The lower holds of the A330-300 and 777-300ER take PMC pallets and LD3 containers, which gives reasonable scale for machinery, automotive parts and building materials from China. The 737-800 carries high-frequency small shipments on the domestic legs beyond Jakarta.

Widebody belly doors and payload limits suit pressure- and temperature-sensitive instruments, electronic components and pharmaceutical intermediates; narrowbody bellies carry small pieces and low-density cargo. Declaring accurate pieces, weight and dimensions at booking lets us match the right aircraft and build, avoiding wasted space and transit delays.

Airports served in China and schedules

Garuda scheduled destinations in China are Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The schedule below reflects published information at this time; times are local and change with the season, and are confirmed by the carrier on the day of booking.

China citiesAirport codeFlight numberSchedule and remarks
ShanghaiPVGGA894 / GA895Jakarta CGK and Shanghai Pudong, flown by A330-300 widebodies with belly cargo, flight time about six hours
GuangzhouCANGA899 and othersJakarta and Guangzhou, flown by 737-800 narrowbodies, with added frequency from September 2026
BeijingPEK / PKXNo published scheduled service at presentFormer destination, with no published schedule at this time; confirmed by the carrier on the day of booking
Shenzhen and ChengduSZX / TFUNo published scheduled service at presentNo scheduled Garuda flights; connect through Shanghai or Guangzhou

Shanghai Pudong and Guangzhou Baiyun have international cargo terminals, customs inspection and bonded storage. Shippers in East China can load at Shanghai Pudong and those in South China at Guangzhou Baiyun. For North and Southwest China we arrange trucking to the Shanghai or Guangzhou terminal, usually delivering the day before the documentation cut-off.

International air freight services from China

With the direct flight to Jakarta and the onward Garuda network, export cargo from China reaches the following destinations. Across Indonesia: Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar on Bali, Medan, Makassar, Manado, Pontianak and Batam. Machinery, automotive parts, electronic components and building materials from China enter the archipelago feeder network after one transit in Jakarta.

Southeast Asia: Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, on the Garuda network or through SkyTeam interline. Australia: Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Northeast Asia: Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul. Europe: hubs such as Amsterdam, served by Garuda widebodies on long-haul routes.

For Chinese exporters the main value of the Jakarta hub is last-leg coverage of the archipelago. Island cities are dispersed and ground transport is slow, so air feeder services are the fastest route for Chinese cargo to Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan and Makassar. Cross-border e-commerce sellers and general trade exporters can use those feeders to distribute to the main Indonesian consumer cities.

On the return leg, Indonesian seafood such as bird's nests and chilled fish, coffee from Bali and Sumatra, spices including cloves, nutmeg and pepper, and agricultural and light food products fly back to Shanghai or Guangzhou in belly space on the direct flights. Bird's nests and chilled seafood carry strict import licensing and cold chain requirements, so quarantine and permit documents must be filed at booking.

Cargo for inland island cities needs a one-day buffer at Jakarta. Surabaya, Denpasar and Medan are served by several Garuda 737-800 feeder flights daily or every other day and have reasonable space; thinner points such as Makassar, Manado and Pontianak have fewer flights, so feeder space should be confirmed at booking. We can check the Jakarta connections for any island city.

Freight advantages

Garuda advantages for Chinese shippers fall into three areas. First, steady belly capacity on the direct China-Jakarta routes: A330-300 widebodies fly Shanghai-Jakarta with tens of tonnes of belly cargo per flight, taking palletised, loose and e-commerce consignments, while 737-800 aircraft fly Guangzhou-Jakarta with added frequency from September 2026, which gives South China shippers a high-frequency option. Second, archipelago coverage beyond Jakarta: Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan and Makassar are served by frequent 737-800 feeders, so consignees do not have to arrange inter-island trucking or sea distribution themselves.

Third, SkyTeam connections. As a SkyTeam member Garuda interlines with China Eastern, Xiamen Airlines and other members. Cargo can join the SkyTeam global network at Jakarta or at a Chinese gateway and reach points in Europe, North America and South America. Chinese companies with projects or distribution in Indonesia gain onward global distribution.

The trade mix balances the route in both directions. China exports machinery, automotive parts, electronics and building materials; Indonesia sends back seafood, coffee, bird's nests and spices. Two-way volume keeps load factors and rates on the Jakarta-China routes steadier than on one-way routes. Shippers that also import from Indonesia can book both legs through us and ask for a combined rate.

For Chinese cross-border e-commerce sellers the direct belly service balances speed and cost. Against ten to fourteen days by sea, air cuts replenishment to two or three days, which helps Indonesian distributors hold less inventory and free up cash. The feeder network beyond Jakarta lets small e-commerce parcels reach Surabaya, Denpasar and Medan directly instead of being consolidated in Jakarta alone.

Booking through an agent in China

The standard path for cargo on Garuda is as follows. First, the shipper sends a shipping instruction to Goodhope Logistics (China) Limited stating the origin airport, with Shanghai Pudong PVG or Guangzhou CAN recommended and consolidation in Shenzhen or Hong Kong followed by trucking to either also possible; the destination, Jakarta CGK or a connecting city such as Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan or Makassar; piece count, weight and dimensions; the HS code; and whether the goods contain batteries, liquids or other restricted components. Second, we check available space against the Garuda schedule and submit the instruction to the carrier for a space confirmation number.

Third, the shipper delivers to the Shanghai Pudong or Guangzhou airport terminal, or to a nominated bonded warehouse, before the cut-off for screening, build-up and export clearance. Fourth, after departure we send the waybill copy and a pre-alert. Fifth, on arrival at Jakarta the Garuda ground agent notifies the consignee to clear the shipment; if the destination is another island city, the cargo transits in Jakarta and continues on a 737-800 feeder to the final point.

For regular shippers we aggregate monthly volumes and seek contract rates and priority space from Garuda. Urgent shipments can be requested before the cut-off. Return cargo such as bird's nests and seafood needs import licences and quarantine documents, which are best submitted for review at booking. Feeder space at Jakarta can be locked at the same time so there is no gap at the transit point.

Other specialist services

Garuda widebody belly space carries general cargo, machinery and electrical products, automotive parts, electronic components, building materials, textiles and consumer goods. Pharmaceutical intermediates, leather goods and dried or fresh food without extreme temperature requirements can travel in standard belly conditions. Acceptance of dangerous goods, perishables and live animals is confirmed in writing by Garuda cargo at booking.

Bird's nests are a signature return commodity on the Garuda China routes. Indonesian bird's nests require import licensing, quarantine certificates and tight temperature control, and full documents must be filed at booking. We help Chinese importers with licence pre-assessment, booking, cold chain connection and domestic delivery. Chilled seafood such as fish and shrimp needs cold chain space and fast clearance, and the operating terms are confirmed in writing by the carrier.

For Chinese contractors building projects in Indonesia, the Jakarta hub moves urgent project parts, equipment spares and site supplies. The feeder network delivers to Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan and other sites within one or two days. Urgent space should be requested through our priority channel before the cut-off. Garuda has a review process for oversized pieces, and actual dimensions and weight must be provided in writing at booking.

For high-value electronics, a declared value for carriage can be added to raise the liability limit under the air waybill. Consumer electronics, power tools and new energy components containing lithium batteries need an MSDS and a transport conditions report at booking, which Garuda cargo reviews for space suitability. Dangerous goods must be declared under the IATA dangerous goods regulations and cannot be loaded before review.

FAQ

Garuda Indonesia destinations in China

Garuda scheduled destinations in China are Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Shanghai-Jakarta is flown by A330-300 widebodies; Guangzhou-Jakarta by 737-800 narrowbodies, with added frequency from September 2026. Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu have no scheduled Garuda flights at present and no published schedule; confirm with the carrier on the day of booking.

Transit time from Shanghai to Jakarta

Airbus A330-300 widebodies fly the nonstop leg from Shanghai Pudong to Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta in about six hours of flight time; exact timings depend on winds and traffic control. Compared with routings through Singapore or Bangkok, the nonstop flight removes one stop and a second handling, which usually saves half a day to a day on arrival.

Shipping from China to Indonesian island cities

After arrival in Jakarta the cargo continues in the belly of a Garuda 737-800 to Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan, Makassar and other island cities, so the air legs are Shanghai or Guangzhou to Jakarta and Jakarta to the island city. We can lock the Jakarta connection at booking to avoid a gap. Local ground agents notify consignees for clearance and pickup in the island cities.

Import channel for Indonesian bird's nests and chilled seafood

The return direction is workable. Indonesian bird's nests need import licensing, quarantine certificates and tight temperature control, and full quarantine and permit documents must be filed at booking; chilled seafood needs cold chain space and fast clearance. The standard path is loading at Jakarta, belly carriage on the direct flight to Shanghai or Guangzhou, and import clearance and delivery in China by us. Cold chain handling and licence review are confirmed in writing by the carrier.

Booking process and timing with us

Shippers should submit the instruction seven to ten days before the planned departure; we confirm space and quote within one or two working days. The cut-off is normally 24 to 36 hours before departure from Shanghai or Guangzhou, and cargo must be at the terminal or our bonded warehouse before then. For customers with steady monthly volumes we can set up a weekly space allocation.

Routes, schedules, aircraft types and payload figures are for reference only and are subject to Garuda Indonesia official notices and confirmation on the day of booking.
