Airline overview

Western Global Airlines is a contract cargo operator in the classic sense: it owns and operates its aircraft and crews and leases whole-aircraft capacity under contract to other airlines, forwarders, e-commerce companies and government departments. It sells no tickets and publishes no fixed timetable, and its routings follow cargo demand. That makes it quick to respond and tight on cost in point-to-point trans-Pacific freight.

Profile and business model

Company profile

Western Global Airlines was founded on 6 March 2013 by Jim Neff, who had more than thirty years in aviation, as a privately held US all-cargo airline. It received US Department of Transportation (DOT) approval on 24 February 2014 and its FAA Part 121 operating certificate on 1 August 2014, then began commercial service with MD-11F freighters. In November 2015 the FAA approved operation of the Boeing 747-400, with the corresponding DOT approval in May 2016, and the fleet grew from there.

The company is headquartered in Estero in southwest Florida, with its main crew base at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW, Fort Myers), and has had hubs or operating points in Miami, Liège in Belgium, Anchorage in Alaska and Hong Kong. In July 2018 it opened an aircraft maintenance facility of about 15,000 square metres (160,000 square feet) in Shreveport, Louisiana, able to hold three widebody freighters at once for its own aircraft.

Milestones

  • 2013— the company is incorporated in Florida;
  • 2014— FAA Part 121 certificate obtained; MD-11F freighters enter commercial service;
  • 2015–2016— Boeing 747-400F enters service, giving the fleet two aircraft types;
  • 2016— joins the US Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF), qualifying for US government and military air charter work;
  • 2018— opens a scheduled Hong Kong–Los Angeles cargo service, operated with the freight platform Flexport at two 747-400F flights a week; the Shreveport maintenance base opens the same year;
  • 2023— completes a financial restructuring and continues with a stronger balance sheet;
  • To date— continues to provide trans-Pacific and worldwide charter capacity to e-commerce, express, forwarding, government and humanitarian organisations.

Business profile

1 Wholly owned fleet:All 19 widebody freighters are owned, free of lessor constraints, which makes the cost model more stable.
2 Single engine strategy:The whole fleet uses GE CF6-80C2 engines, which keeps maintenance and spares efficient.
3 Cargo only, no passengers:Freight is the only business, so aircraft utilization and transit planning revolve around cargo demand.
4 Global contract network:Long-term charter relationships with express, e-commerce and freight groups in several countries, with a blue-chip customer base behind its service record.
5 24/7 response:The organisation is built for speed and flexibility, so it can handle last-minute extra flights and routing changes.

Fleet: MD-11F and Boeing 747-400F

McDonnell Douglas MD-11F

Three-engine long-haul widebody freighter · fleet workhorse

The MD-11F was designed and built by McDonnell Douglas, now part of Boeing, and is widely regarded as a benchmark for efficiency among large widebody freighters; it has long been a main type for operators such as FedEx, Lufthansa Cargo and UPS. Western Global Airlines uses its MD-11Fs, with a maximum payload of about 60 to 90 tonnes, on trans-Pacific and long intercontinental freight.

  • Three GE CF6-80C2 turbofans, balancing fuel economy and reliability;
  • both main deck and lower hold carry cargo, with high volume utilization, suited to e-commerce express, general cargo and low-density freight;
  • strong long-haul range for trunk sectors of eight hours or more, such as China–US and China–Europe;
  • a large side cargo door for quick loading of bulky and irregular pieces.

Fleet sizeabout 14–15 aircraft (adjusted with capacity allocation)

Boeing 747-400F / BCF

Four-engine heavy widebody freighter

The Boeing 747-400F is regarded in the air cargo industry as the standard heavy freighter and is among the most widely used large widebody freighters, with more than 240 still in service. Its defining feature is the combination of an upward-opening nose door and side door, which allows non-standard containers up to 10 feet (about 3 m) high as well as very long or tall irregular pieces, giving it unusual flexibility on the main deck.

  • Four GE CF6-80C2 engines with ample power for trans-Pacific trunk routes;
  • maximum payload of about 90 to 110 tonnes, strong for large single shipments and palletised cargo;
  • the nose door takes oversize pieces and 10-foot-high containers;
  • like the MD-11F, a large freighter type approved under the US military CRAF programme.

Global network and service in the China market

Airports served in China

Western Global Airlines has treatedHong Kong International Airport (HKG)as an important operating point, and in 2018 opened a scheduled 747-400F cargo service between Hong Kong and Los Angeles (LAX) with ground handling by Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (Hactl). At mainland Chinese airports it works mainly on ad hoc and extra-section charters, with the actual airports depending on where the cargo starts and how capacity is allocated.

Western Global Airlines has served 463 cities in 143 countries and regions; which countries and airports are actually available depends on current capacity and charter contracts. For Chinese exporters,China–United Statesis the most representative lane, particularly for full-aircraft or pallet-space carriage of cross-border e-commerce, high-value general cargo, large equipment and time-critical shipments.

Typical China–US shipping scenarios

  • E-commerce volumes:full-pallet shipments from cross-border sellers that need dependable, controlled arrival times in the United States;
  • High-value general cargo:fast movement of electronics, machinery and vehicle parts;
  • Bulky and out-of-gauge cargo:very long, tall or heavy pieces loaded through the 747-400F nose door;
  • Urgent replenishment:sales peaks and line-stoppage material that need extra charter sections;
  • Dedicated charters:with enough volume, a full-aircraft charter can fly nonstop from China to a US gateway, point to point.

Why use an all-cargo carrier from China

Ample capacity, no passenger cabin

Full freighter loading independent of passenger bellies, with 60 to 110 tonnes per shipment and firmer peak-season capacity, particularly for bulk, palletised and full e-commerce lots.

Point to point, with more control over transit

Charters and contract flights usually run mainline from China nonstop to a US gateway, with fewer handling points, less risk of loss or delay and more control over total transit.

Oversize pieces and flexible loading

The 747-400F nose door takes 10-foot-high containers and oversize pieces, and the MD-11F loads bulky items quickly, which gives irregular cargo more options.

Competitive cost structure

An owned fleet and a single GE engine type keep operating costs low, which leaves room for competitive charter and pallet-space pricing at the same transit time.

Flexible response on demand

The contract model adds capacity quickly for sales events and urgent replenishment, and ad hoc sections are arranged faster than with a fixed-schedule airline.

Freighter handling for DG and temperature control

As an all-cargo carrier it has freighter conditions for temperature-controlled cargo and dangerous goods, with a more stable hold environment.

Blue-chip customers

It serves well-known e-commerce, express and forwarding companies, and its operational experience comes from that work.

Safety, compliance and government work

It holds an FAA Part 121 certificate and belongs to the US military CRAF, so its safety and compliance standards have been reviewed by US government agencies over many years.

Using this airline usually means a full aircraft or large pallet loads. If the volume does not fill an aircraft, a forwarder can combine cargo from several shippers into one pallet or part-charter programme, spreading the unit cost while keeping the point-to-point freighter transit. In peak season, booking pallet space more than a week ahead usually secures steadier pricing and space.

How to book in China

Booking steps

StepContent
1give the forwarder the cargo details: commodity, pieces, weight, volume, destination city and required date;
2the forwarder checks capacity and space, confirming whether a full aircraft, pallet or loose-load option works on Western Global Airlines or another carrier;
3the quote and plan are confirmed, itemising freight, fuel surcharge, terminal handling, declaration and delivery;
4booking confirmation: the forwarder secures space with the airline or charter broker and issues confirmation;
5delivery and declaration: cargo goes to the nominated warehouse at the agreed time and the forwarder arranges export declaration, screening and loading;
6tracking and arrival: status is tracked by air waybill (AWB) and US import clearance and delivery are arranged.

Documents needed for booking

  • Basic cargo details:commodity in Chinese and English, pieces, gross weight, volume (length, width, height) and packing type;
  • Shipper and consignee:company name, address, contact and telephone for both shipper and consignee;
  • Trade and transport terms:Incoterms (EXW/FOB/CIF/DDP), departure airport, destination airport and required shipping date;
  • Attachments:commercial invoice, packing list and declaration documents, plus MSDS and DG identification for special cargo;
  • Special requirements:whether temperature control is needed, whether the cargo is dangerous goods, whether there are oversize or overweight pieces, and whether insurance is required.
China contact details:Western Global Airlines has no branch of its own in China and publishes no China sales number. To book space or a charter, shippers can use the airline website or work through a Chinese international freight forwarder or booking agent, which coordinates capacity and ground services.

What a forwarder adds

  • Wider access to capacity:the agent compares space and prices across airlines to find the best option;
  • Professional handling:the agent knows declaration, screening, loading and documentation, which cuts coordination effort;
  • Risk sharing:the agent helps with exceptions, claims and customs inspection;
  • One-stop service:booking, declaration, US clearance and delivery are handled as one arrangement.

Further service notes

Key hubs and gateways

The network covers several key hubs: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is the main US base, with operating points at Miami (MIA) and Anchorage (ANC) in Alaska; Liège (LGG) in Belgium is the European gateway; Hong Kong (HKG) has historically been the Asia Pacific point. In trans-Pacific carriage,Los Angeles (LAX)andHonolulu (HNL)are important US gateways and stops, and cargo can reach them by charter from China or be distributed quickly across the country.

Temperature-controlled and special cargo

The freighter hold is stable and controllable and, with professional ground handling, can take cargo sensitive to temperature and humidity such as perishables, pharmaceuticals and precision instruments, which are high-value. As a fully certificated all-cargo carrier its operation also supports, on demand,Dangerous goods transportdangerous goods (handled under the IATA dangerous goods regulations) and other special cargo.

Charter service

Where volumes are sufficient or the cargo is unusual, a charter can be arranged nonstop from China to the destination,Full-aircraft chartergiving genuine point-to-point carriage: dates follow the customer's shipping plan, airports are negotiable, and it suits pre-event stocking, urgent replenishment and oversize or overweight equipment. Rates and transit are agreed directly between the parties.

Emergency capacity and global response

As a 24/7 contract cargo carrier, Western Global Airlines has deep experience in emergency logistics: it flew many humanitarian missions into affected areas during the Ebola outbreak, carried millions of masks, protective supplies and medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has handled unusual work such as large animal rescue. Its fly-on-demand model gives shippers a way to respond to sudden logistics needs.

Trans-Pacific gateways and stops

On trans-Pacific charters and cargo flights, Los Angeles (LAX) and Honolulu (HNL) are the main gateways and stops after entering the United States; cargo from China can go nonstop or with a fuel stop depending on destination and payload, then distribute inland. Goodhope Freight confirms airports and stops at booking; schedules change with the season and the carrier's confirmation on the day of booking governs.

Cargo details to confirm before booking

The airline works mainly with freighters and charters, so bookings require the commodity, pieces, piece weights and dimensions, and whether temperature control, dangerous goods or oversize pieces are involved; special cargo is declared per shipment under IATA rules. Goodhope Freight then checks door sizes, floor load and loading limits on the MD-11F and 747-400F before confirming space.

AWB and tracking:The Western Global Airlines air waybill (AWB) prefix is904, and after departure the shipper can track the shipment with the 11-digit MAWB beginning 904 through the forwarder or a public AWB tracking site such as www.mawb.cn, and find more company information at www.westernglobalairlines.com. Confirm the AWB number and tracking method with the forwarder before departure so departure, arrival and clearance progress are visible as it happens.
