Airline overview

Maldivian is the national flag carrier of the Republic of Maldives, with IATA two-letter code Q2 and ICAO three-letter code DQA. It is headquartered in Malé and operates from Malé Velana International Airport (MLE); its website is maldivian.aero.

Maldivian began as Island Aviation Services in 2000, initially flying two small aircraft on domestic atoll routes. It was later renamed Maldivian, gradually added international routes and became the national flag carrier. In January 2025 it took delivery of its first widebody, an Airbus A330-200, marking the move into long-haul widebody operations.

According to Maldivian, the A330-200 has three cabins and 264 seats, with 18 in business, 36 in premium economy and 210 in economy. The aircraft flies the scheduled nonstop routes from Malé to Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, one flight a week each. On 7 July 2025 Maldivian opened a seasonal Shenzhen service with the A320, running to 21 August, one flight a week.

Maldivian is the only flag carrier of the Maldives and the only Maldivian airline operating widebody long-haul routes. It began with domestic atoll services only, and the A330 delivery in 2025 gave it long-haul widebody capability for the first time, a step from regional feeder operations to international long haul. For Chinese shippers that means widebody nonstop belly capacity from China to the Maldives on a Maldivian carrier for the first time.

For Chinese shippers the core value of Maldivian is the belly capacity of the A330-200 on nonstop routes. A widebody belly takes pallets and containers and is far larger than a narrowbody, which suits volume cargo from China to the Maldives. Malé Velana is the country's only international gateway, so cargo arriving nonstop can connect to Maldivian ATR regional capacity for distribution to the resort islands.

The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 natural atolls and about 1,200 coral islands with very little land, and almost all production inputs and consumer supplies are imported. Tourism is the economic mainstay, with more than 150 resort islands, each depending on air and sea supply for food and beverage, toiletries, furniture and appliances, building materials and water treatment equipment. Air cargo matters at the Malé gateway because sea transit is slow and most resorts sit inside atolls that large vessels cannot reach directly.

China is an important trading partner and source market for the Maldives. Chinese exports there are mainly building materials, machinery and electrical products, furniture, food, textiles and consumer goods. As resorts expand and refurbish, demand keeps growing for Chinese building finishes, water treatment equipment, solar equipment and furniture, and the nonstop widebody belly of the A330-200 gives that volume cargo an efficient air channel.

Malé Velana International Airport sits on Hulhulé Island east of Malé, linked to the capital by bridge and ferry. It has one runway and one international terminal, and the cargo terminal handles all international arrivals and departures. As the flag carrier Maldivian has priority ground handling at Malé, with assured turnaround times and cargo handling.

History and the widebody era

2000: foundation

Island Aviation Services is founded with two small aircraft on domestic atoll routes linking Malé with the resort islands.

Renamed Maldivian

The company becomes Maldivian, gradually adds international routes, becomes the national flag carrier and adds ATR72 and ATR42 regional aircraft.

2013-2019: China points

According to the Maldivian cargo manual, the airline operated routes to several Chinese cities between 2013 and 2019, building operating experience on China-Maldives passenger and cargo traffic.

January 2025: first A330

The first widebody Airbus A330-200 is delivered, opening long-haul widebody operations with a 264-seat three-class layout on international routes.

2025: nonstop China

Scheduled nonstop routes open from Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu to Malé with the A330-200, one flight a week each, with cargo handled at the PACTL terminal at Shanghai Pudong.

July 2025: seasonal Shenzhen

A seasonal Shenzhen to Malé service opens with the A320, running to 21 August, one flight a week, created for Shenzhen tourism demand.

Fleet and belly loading capability

The Maldivian fleet comprises widebody long-haul passenger aircraft, regional turboprops and small domestic aircraft, with cargo carried in passenger belly holds. The A330-200 belly is the core capacity from China to the Maldives.

Aircraft typeFleet roleBelly capacity characteristicsSuitable China cargo

ATR72Regional turboprop70 economy seats on Malé to domestic atoll routes with limited belly spaceSmall consignments distributed to resort islands after arrival at Malé
ATR42Small regional turboprop46 economy seats on smaller atoll routesSmall distribution loads between atolls

No public information shows Maldivian operating dedicated freighters. Cargo capacity is based on passenger belly holds, run by Maldivian Cargo, and the A330-200 has markedly increased belly supply from China to the Maldives.

The A330-200 is an Airbus long-haul widebody about 58.8 m long with a wingspan of about 60.3 m and hold volume of about 160 cubic metres, able to take more than ten pallets and several containers. Compared with a narrowbody the A330 belly is an order of magnitude larger in piece weight, total volume and unitisation. Volume building materials, furniture and equipment from China to the Maldives can be built up and loaded directly without breaking down, which raises handling efficiency and cargo security.

The ATR72 and ATR42 are regional turboprops developed by a French-Italian joint venture, suited to short low-level sectors and simple runways. Maldives atoll runways are short, which makes the ATR series ideal for inter-atoll work. Cargo is unloaded from the A330 at Malé, transferred to the ATR belly and flown to the atoll airport near each resort, then taken to the island by speedboat.

Nonstop China network

According to the commercial office of the Chinese embassy in the Maldives and Maldivian's own information, the airline has operated the following nonstop China to Malé routes since 2025.

Beijing (PEK)

Beijing Capital International Airport nonstop to Malé Velana International Airport, flown with the A330-200, one flight a week.

Shanghai (PVG)

Shanghai Pudong International Airport nonstop to Malé, flown with the A330-200, one flight a week, with cargo handled at the PACTL Phase 1 terminal.

Chengdu (TFU)

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport nonstop to Malé, flown with the A330-200, one flight a week, serving tourism and trade cargo from southwest China.

Shenzhen (SZX, seasonal)

Seasonal operation from 7 July to 21 August 2025, flown with the A320, one flight a week, created for high Shenzhen demand.

Beyond these nonstop routes, China to the Maldives is also served by China Southern (nonstop from Guangzhou), China Eastern (Shanghai) and Hainan Airlines (Beijing). Maldivian's nonstop adds a further widebody belly option for Chinese shippers.

By coverage, Beijing serves North and Northeast China, Shanghai the east and the Yangtze Delta, Chengdu the southwest, and Shenzhen the south on a seasonal basis. The four points give every major Chinese economic region a nonstop belly channel to the Maldives, so shippers can hand over at the nearest airport and cut domestic trucking cost.

According to PACTL, the Shanghai Pudong cargo terminal, Maldivian became a new customer in January 2025 on the Shanghai Pudong to Malé route, one flight a week with the A330-200 and cargo handled at the PACTL Phase 1 terminal. Building materials, furniture and e-commerce cargo from East China can be shipped through Pudong using PACTL's pallet handling and loading facilities.

Cargo services and cargo types

Maldivian Cargo is the airline's cargo division and provides international, domestic atoll and express cargo. China to the Maldives is mainly international belly cargo on the A330-200.

International belly cargo

The A330-200 belly on the nonstop Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu to Malé services takes PMC pallets and ULDs and is far larger than a narrowbody. It suits volume Chinese exports to the Maldives, including building materials, tourism supplies, food and beverage, medical supplies and e-commerce cargo.

Domestic atoll distribution

After arrival at Malé cargo connects to the belly of Maldivian ATR72 and ATR42 regional aircraft for distribution to resort islands. The Maldives comprises 26 atolls and about 1,200 islands, and resort supplies depend heavily on air and sea.

Express cargo

Maldivian Cargo provides express service for urgent documents, samples and supplies. With Malé the country's only international gateway, express cargo is distributed quickly to the resort islands after arrival.

Resort supply cargo

The Maldives is a leading global resort destination, and resorts import large volumes of food and beverage, toiletries, building materials, water treatment equipment, furniture and appliances. Such cargo is bulky and suits the A330-200 belly. Chinese tiles, sanitaryware, light fittings, mattresses, sofas, air conditioners and solar equipment are common purchases for resort refurbishment.

E-commerce and express cargo

Local e-commerce and resident online shopping are growing, and international express cargo enters through Malé airport and is distributed to the islands. The Maldivian Cargo express service provides a channel for small time-critical parcels.

Construction equipment

Tourism infrastructure projects continue, and Chinese contractors work on resort, airport and housing construction. Equipment, building materials and spares suit the A330-200 belly and are distributed to site quickly after the nonstop flight.

Restricted categories and categories without public data

No public information sets out Maldivian's detailed rules for dangerous goods, live animals or temperature-controlled cold chain. The acceptable categories are governed by the latest Maldivian Cargo manual and the booking confirmation.

For larger building material and equipment consignments, shippers should book two to three weeks ahead: the A330-200 flies only once a week nonstop and space can tighten in the tourism peak. Goodhope can split shipments across flights to the shipper's plan and avoid a backlog. For urgent express and sample cargo, book the same week's nonstop and clear and distribute quickly after arrival at Malé.

Maldives import duty and clearance rules are relatively simple, and most resort supplies are imported by the hotel. Goodhope helps shippers provide the invoice, packing list and certificate of origin needed for clearance, shortening time at Malé airport. Duty rates follow the latest Maldives customs rules.

How Maldives resort supplies are structured

The Maldives comprises 26 atolls and about 1,200 islands with very little land, and almost all production inputs and consumer supplies are imported. Food and beverage, toiletries, building materials, water treatment equipment, furniture and appliances for more than 150 resort islands are imported through the Malé gateway and distributed. Chinese tiles, sanitaryware, light fittings, mattresses, sofas, air conditioners and solar equipment are common purchases for resort expansion and refurbishment, and such cargo is bulky and standard in specification, which suits palletised carriage in the A330-200 belly.

Categories of Chinese exports to the Maldives

Chinese exports to the Maldives are mainly building finishes, machinery and electrical products, furniture and appliances, food and beverage, textiles and apparel and consumer goods. Building materials and furniture account for the largest share, for resort construction and refurbishment; food, beverage and toiletries supply daily hotel operations; machinery and solar equipment support island power and water treatment upgrades. The A330-200 pallet space can carry building materials and furniture together, giving high utilisation on a single sector.

Clearance at the Malé gateway

Malé Velana International Airport is the Maldives' only international gateway and all international air cargo clears there. Import duty rates are relatively moderate, and most resort supplies are imported by the hotel under tourism-related tax concessions. Goodhope helps shippers prepare the invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and hotel purchase contract for clearance, shortening time at Malé airport. After clearance cargo moves to the resort islands by speedboat or domestic regional flight.

Nonstop widebody compared with transfer options

China to the Maldives is also served by China Southern nonstop from Guangzhou, China Eastern nonstop from Shanghai and Hainan Airlines nonstop from Beijing. Maldivian's advantages are a Maldivian national carrier fleet, priority ground handling at Malé and volume belly space on the A330. For larger building material and furniture consignments, palletising on a nonstop widebody is more efficient than a narrowbody transfer.
