Shipping from China to Guyana, step by step

Goodhope Freight is a licensed NVOCC based in Shenzhen, registered as GD20230925153335, and has been moving cargo out of China since 2012. To Guyana we run full containers and shared containers port-to-port into Georgetown, air freight airport-to-airport into Cheddi Jagan International, and express parcels dispatched from our depot. Every service stops at the port, the airport or the depot. Your consignee arranges import clearance and collection.

Guyana sits on the north-east coast of South America but trades as part of the Caribbean, and that combination shows up in the paperwork. It applies the CARICOM Common External Tariff, it is the only country on the continent with English as its official language, and its customs administration runs on the ASYCUDA World platform. English documentation is one fewer problem than on most South American lanes.

Two things decide whether an entry here goes smoothly, and neither is the freight rate. The first is importer registration and licensing, which has to be in place before the goods move rather than after. The second is the way duty, excise and the 14 per cent tax stack on the same CIF base.

At a glance

Main port: Georgetown, on the Demerara River  ·  Main airport: Cheddi Jagan International (GEO)  ·  Currency: Guyanese dollar  ·  Official language: English, which simplifies customs paperwork  ·  Duty: CARICOM Common External Tariff, broadly 5 to 20 per cent of CIF with higher protective rates on some lines  ·  Value-added tax at 14 per cent  ·  Excise on alcohol, tobacco, petroleum and motor vehicles  ·  Environmental tax on certain containers  ·  Entries filed as an electronic Single Administrative Document on ASYCUDA World  ·  Transhipment via Trinidad, Barbados or Miami

How your cargo moves: China to Guyana

Eight steps from your supplier's door to yours. The last four are the ones shaped by local rules.

  1. Pickup from your supplierWe collect the goods anywhere in China and bring them to our consolidation point.
  2. Export clearanceChina customs declaration filed and released before the goods move to the port.
  3. Loading and departureContainer loaded, sealed and handed to the carrier at the Chinese port.
  4. Relay through Trinidad, Barbados or MiamiGeorgetown is served by feeder and transhipment services, so the hub rather than the ocean leg sets the arrival window.
  5. Discharge at GeorgetownContainers are worked at the river port; air cargo is handled at the GEO cargo terminal.
  6. Importer registration and licence already in placeYour consignee needs a tax identification number and, for regulated goods, an import licence issued before the declaration is filed.
  7. Entry filed as an eSAD on ASYCUDA WorldThe broker lodges the electronic Single Administrative Document with supporting documents attached and the commodity codes declared.
  8. Duty, excise and the 14 per cent tax settledCharges are assessed on the CIF-based value and paid, then the goods are released for collection.

Duty rates, VAT rates and clearance times move, and the figure that applies to your goods is the one set for your commodity code on the day of clearance. We check the current position against your code before your goods sail and confirm it to you in writing — ask for that check when you request a quote.

A river port, and what that means for your cargo

Georgetown sits on the Demerara River and it is the country's primary seaport, handling the bulk of imports. River ports behave differently from deep-water container terminals: vessels work against the tide and the channel, discharge can involve lighterage, and yard space is tighter. Build a little slack into your planning rather than assuming mainland-port handling times.

Cheddi Jagan International handles the air freight, and it is where urgent spares, medical supplies and electronics arrive. Most sea cargo is transhipped through Trinidad, Barbados or Miami before reaching Georgetown, which is why the relay you book matters as much here as it does on the smaller islands.

Choosing a service on a fast-growing lane

Below roughly 15 cubic metres a shared container is the practical answer, rated by volume with a weight conversion and a one cubic metre minimum. Between about 15 and 28 cubic metres, run the comparison between a 20GP and the per-cubic-metre rating both ways. Above that, a 40GP or 40HC normally wins for bulky light cargo.

Air freight into Georgetown works from about 45 kg and suits electronics, pharmaceuticals, urgent spares and samples. Transit is driven by the connection rather than the distance. Express courier handles documents and single cartons and ends at the depot. Given the growth in import volumes, booking space earlier than you would on a quiet lane is sensible.

The tariff bands that decide your duty

Guyana applies the CARICOM Common External Tariff to goods arriving from outside the region. For general cargo the rate broadly falls between 5 and 20 per cent of the CIF value, with capital goods and machinery often at the lower end and finished consumer goods at the higher end. Some agricultural lines carry protective rates above that band.

Certain sectors, including agriculture, mining, construction and manufacturing, have concessionary or zero-rated treatment for defined capital equipment. Whether your goods qualify depends on the commodity code and on the current schedules, so have your broker confirm it before you price the order rather than assuming the standard band applies.

How excise and tax stack on a Guyanese entry

Value-added tax is charged at 14 per cent and it is assessed on the CIF value plus duty, not on the invoice value alone. Where excise applies, that is added into the base as well, so the tax is calculated on a figure that already includes the other charges.

Excise applies to alcohols, tobacco products, petroleum products and motor vehicles, and the rates are substantial. An environmental tax is also levied on certain non-returnable beverage containers. If any of those categories are in your container, price them before you ship, because they change the landed cost materially.

Registration and licences come before the vessel

Importers must be registered with the Guyana Revenue Authority and hold a tax identification number before a declaration can be filed. An import licence is also required for regulated goods, issued by the ministry responsible for trade, and some categories need prior approval from other agencies such as the food and drug department or the agriculture ministry.

This is the part of the process that is easy to leave too late, because it is invisible from the China side and it does not appear on a freight quote. Tell your consignee to confirm registration and licensing while the goods are still on the water, and to ask whether their commodity needs a permit at all.

Where a personal import differs from a commercial entry

A returning resident moving household effects and a business importing stock for resale are treated differently, and the allowances that apply to personal baggage do not extend to commercial consignments. A commercial entry is assessed on duty and the 14 per cent tax whatever the value, and goods manufactured in China do not qualify for CARICOM origin preference.

Used household goods may qualify for reduced treatment depending on the importer's status, and that eligibility needs confirming with the revenue authority in advance rather than claimed at the counter. If you are shipping personal effects rather than commercial stock, say so at quotation stage, because the document set is different.

Packing for a humid river port

Goods sit on an open quay in a hot, humid climate, often longer than on a deep-water lane. Moisture protection inside cartons is worth the small cost for textiles, paper products, electronics and anything with a metal finish. Strap or palletise dense cargo, because yard handling equipment at a river port is not always what you would expect.

Wood packaging material must comply with the international standard for phytosanitary treatment, and untreated timber is a common cause of holds. Keep the packing list accurate to the carton count, because a mismatch between the manifest and the physical count holds the whole entry rather than the missing carton.

Documents, licences and the eSAD filing

The broker files an electronic Single Administrative Document on ASYCUDA World with these documents attached. Clean, structured data at this stage is what makes an entry move, because the system matches the declaration against the uploaded documents.

Transit times, and a port handling rapid growth

Consolidated shipments into Georgetown typically run in the region of 35 to 50 days port-to-port depending on the Chinese origin and how the transhipment connects, and full container routings vary with the relay chosen. The country's import volumes have grown sharply, and the port and customs administration are working through that growth.

The practical response is the same one that applies across the Caribbean: plan on a range rather than a date, get the paperwork right at origin, and have your consignee's registration and licences settled before the goods arrive. Most delays on this lane are documentary rather than physical.

Where the freight ends and the clearance starts

We handle collection from your supplier, consolidation and loading in Guangdong, export declaration, and the main carriage into Georgetown or GEO. We issue the transport document, send status updates at each handover, and name the relay ports on the quote rather than hiding them behind a single transit figure.

Your consignee registers with the revenue authority, obtains any licence the goods need, has a licensed broker file the eSAD, settles the duty, excise and 14 per cent tax, and collects. We set out those charges before the goods sail. We do not offer door-to-door delivery to Guyana.

Your first entry at Georgetown

Send us the commodity, the volume and weight, the pickup address in China and where the goods will be collected. We will show the relay options, quote the charges line by line, and set out how the tariff, excise and 14 per cent tax combine on your commodity codes.

If this is your first import, ask your consignee to confirm registration and any licence requirement first, and ask us for the sequence in writing. On a lane where the customs administration is handling rapid growth, a clean file is worth more than a fast vessel.

How it happens when importing into Guyana

Five shipments bought in China and delivered into Guyana, told end to end — where the order came from, how it moved, where it nearly went wrong, and how it finished. Client names are withheld at their request; the situations and the handling are what we deal with on this lane.

Construction materials for a commercial build, 40HC out of Shenzhen

The purchase. A contractor was importing tiles, sanitaryware, aluminium profiles, hardware and lighting for a commercial build in Georgetown, buying from four suppliers in Guangdong.

The move. We collected from all four, consolidated into one 40HC, shipped port-to-port to Georgetown with the transhipment port named at booking.

Where it nearly went wrong. Tiles and sanitaryware are dense, and the buyer had priced the job on volume. On a 40HC the payload limit can bind before the space does, and the consolidation was close to that ceiling.

How it finished. We weighed each lot at the warehouse before loading and rebalanced the load plan so the weight sat within limits. The container sailed on the intended relay, and the broker filed one eSAD against a single set of documents.

Mining support equipment where licensing was the hold-up

The purchase. A supplier was sending pumps, screening media and spare parts for a mining operation, buying from two manufacturers.

The move. One 20GP consolidated at our warehouse, shipped port-to-port to Georgetown, cleared by the consignee's licensed broker.

Where it nearly went wrong. The goods needed an import licence and the importer's registration was not yet confirmed. The container arrived before the paperwork did, and the entry could not be filed.

How it finished. We flagged the licence question at quotation stage on the repeat order and told the buyer to complete registration while the goods were still on the water. The second container cleared within days of discharge instead of waiting on the file.

A beverage line where excise changed the margin

The purchase. A distributor was importing bottled product together with packaging and promotional material in the same container.

The move. One 20GP, shipped port-to-port to Georgetown, entered as a single declaration.

Where it nearly went wrong. Alcoholic beverages carry excise duty, and the 14 per cent tax is then assessed on a base that already includes it. The buyer had costed the shipment on duty and tax alone, and the environmental tax on the containers had not been considered at all.

How it finished. We set out the full assessment against the actual commodity codes before the second order sailed. The buyer restructured the order so the beverage lines shipped separately from the packaging, and the landed cost came in on the revised figure.

Medical supplies by air into Cheddi Jagan

The purchase. A distributor needed diagnostic consumables and equipment spares urgently, buying from a single supplier in Guangdong.

The move. Roughly 320 kg booked as air freight from Guangzhou, connecting into Cheddi Jagan International, collected by the consignee at the cargo terminal.

Where it nearly went wrong. Air freight is rated on chargeable weight, whichever is greater, actual or volumetric, and medical consumables are usually packed in oversized cartons. The buyer had quoted on actual weight.

How it finished. We had the supplier consolidate into right-sized cartons before collection and quoted on the chargeable figure. The consignment moved on the first available connection and cleared against documentation prepared while it was in the air.

Household effects that were not a commercial entry

The purchase. A returning resident was shipping used household effects alongside a small quantity of new furniture bought in China.

The move. A shared container to Georgetown, with the consignee handling clearance through a broker.

Where it nearly went wrong. Used household effects and new commercial goods are treated differently, and the eligibility for reduced treatment on personal effects depended on the importer's status, which had not been confirmed in advance.

How it finished. We separated the two categories on the invoice and packing list and told the buyer to confirm eligibility with the revenue authority before the goods sailed. The entry was made on the correct basis and cleared without reassessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct sea freight service from China to Guyana?

No direct deep-sea call from China. Most cargo is transhipped through Trinidad, Barbados or Miami before reaching Georgetown, and we quote port-to-port with the relay named on the quotation.

What is the VAT rate on imports into Guyana?

Value-added tax is charged at 14 per cent, assessed on the CIF value plus duty rather than on the invoice value alone. Where excise applies it is added into the base as well, so the tax is calculated on a figure that already includes the other charges.

What does my consignee need before the goods arrive?

Registration with the Guyana Revenue Authority and a tax identification number, plus an import licence for regulated goods issued by the ministry responsible for trade. Some categories also need prior approval from other agencies. Sort this out while the goods are still on the water, because an entry cannot be filed without it.

Which goods carry excise duty?

Alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, petroleum products and motor vehicles, with rates that are substantial enough to change the economics of an order. An environmental tax also applies to certain non-returnable beverage containers. Price these before you ship rather than after.

How are entries filed?

The importer or a licensed customs broker files an electronic Single Administrative Document through the ASYCUDA World platform, uploading the invoice, transport document, any licence and certificate of origin. Clean, structured data makes the entry move, because the system matches the declaration against the uploaded documents.

Which airport does air cargo arrive at?

Cheddi Jagan International (GEO) serves Georgetown and handles international air cargo. There is no direct freighter service from China, so connections set the transit time.

Do you offer door-to-door delivery to Guyana?

No. Sea freight is port-to-port to Georgetown, air freight is airport-to-airport to GEO, and express courier dispatch ends at the depot. Your consignee clears the entry, settles the charges and collects the goods.

Which documents are needed to clear goods?

A commercial invoice in English, a packing list, the bill of lading or air waybill, a certificate of origin for tariff assessment, and any import licence, phytosanitary or health certificate the commodity requires. Wood packaging must meet the international phytosanitary standard.

Can lithium batteries be shipped to Guyana?

Built-in and packed-with lithium batteries can be carried subject to proper documentation and packaging. Standalone battery shipments and other dangerous goods classes are assessed case by case and must be declared at quotation stage so we can book with a carrier that accepts the class.

What details do you need to price a shipment?

The commodity, the volume and weight, the pickup address in China and the collection point in Guyana. We will show the relay options, quote the charges line by line, and set out how the tariff, any excise and the 14 per cent tax combine on your codes.
