Home / Logistics Knowledge / Empty Container Return and Drop-off Process
Importers often forget the final step: returning the empty container. Mishandling it triggers detention fees. Here is the process.
Once your goods are unpacked at the warehouse or destination, the container is empty and must be returned to the carrier's designated empty depot within the free period (often 7-14 days, varying by carrier and port).
Carriers allow a number of free days for using the container. After that, detention charges accrue daily until the empty is returned and the equipment is released.
At drop-off, the depot issues an EIR recording the container number, condition, and time. Keep this receipt - it is proof you returned the equipment and stops further charges.
It depends on the Incoterm; under DDP/DDU the seller's side often handles it, under FOB/EXW the importer or its agent does.
You can ask about the nearest authorized depot; some carriers allow alternative locations but confirm first.
Detention is container use outside free days; demurrage is container sitting at the port/terminal. They are separate charges.
