How to Book an FCL Container Shipment

Booking a full container is straightforward if you give the forwarder the right details early. Here is what to prepare and what the confirmation tells you.

Information the forwarder needs

Getting and confirming the quote

The forwarder returns a quote with the ocean rate and local charges. Confirm the scope (port-to-port or door-to-door) and the container type before you commit.

The booking confirmation (Shipping Order)

Once booked, you receive a Shipping Order or S/O. It states the container type, the vessel and estimated departure, the destination, and the key dates. Treat the cut-off dates as firm.

Cut-off dates you must meet

Book 1 to 2 weeks ahead, longer in peak seasons. Confirm the cut-offs in writing and set reminders, because missing them rolls the container to the next sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book FCL?

About 1 to 2 weeks for regular lanes, and longer before Chinese New Year or other peak periods when space is tight.

What is a Shipping Order (S/O)?

It is the booking confirmation from the carrier or forwarder. It carries the container type, vessel, estimated dates, and the cut-off times you must meet.

What happens if I miss the cut-off?

The container is rolled to the next available sailing, which delays delivery and may add storage or re-handling costs.

Do I need to specify the container type when booking?

Yes. State 20ft, 40ft, 40HC, reefer, or open-top so the carrier holds the right equipment for your cargo.
