How to Load and Stuff an FCL Container Safely

Because an FCL container is sealed at origin and opened only at destination, how you load it decides whether the cargo arrives intact. Good stuffing prevents shifting, damage, and claims.

Plan the load before you start

List every carton or piece, its weight, and dimensions. Decide the layering and keep the centre of gravity low and centred. A written load plan avoids an unbalanced container that is hard to handle and risks cargo shifts at sea.

Distribute weight evenly

Spread weight across the floor rather than stacking it all at one end. Keep roughly 50/50 left to right and front to back, and place heavier items at the bottom. Uneven loading stresses the container and the chassis and can cause accidents during handling.

Palletise or floor-load with care

Palletised cargo is faster to load and more stable when stretch-wrapped and stacked in a brick pattern. Floor-loaded cartons should be tight-filled with no gaps; voids let cartons collapse and rub during the voyage.

Brace, lash, and dunnage

Protect against moisture and contamination

Ocean containers sweat as temperatures change. Add desiccant and consider a moisture barrier liner for paper, electronics, or metal goods. Keep the floor clean and dry, and never load wet or contaminated cargo.

Seal and document the container

After stuffing, the container is sealed with a numbered high-security seal. Record the seal number on all documents and take dated photos of the loaded container, the seal, and the closure. Those photos are your evidence if a shortage or damage claim arises.

If you are new to stuffing, use a warehouse with experienced labour and a documented process. A professional stuffing reduces damage risk far more than the small saving of doing it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for loading an FCL container?

It depends on the Incoterms. Under EXW the buyer arranges everything including loading; under FOB or CFR the seller usually stuffs and delivers the full container to the ship. Confirm who owns the stuffing step in your contract.

How do I stop cargo shifting in transit?

Fill all voids, brace and lash the load to the walls, block the doorway, and keep the centre of gravity low and centred. Air bags are effective for palletised gaps.

Do I need to photograph the loaded container?

Strongly recommended. Photos of the load, the seal, and the closed doors are the clearest proof if cargo is short or damaged on arrival.

What is a container seal and why does the number matter?

The seal is a tamper-evident device closed at origin. Its number is recorded on the bill of lading and delivery order; a broken or mismatched seal signals possible theft or tampering and can block release.
