LCL sea and rail freight from China to Hungary (Budapest) — 2026 reference rates

Hungary has two viable China routings. The sea LCL service lands at Koper, Slovenia and feeds Budapest by road; the rail service runs a direct block train from Shenzhen or Xi'an to the Budapest rail terminal, which is the natural choice for time-sensitive cargo.
The sea rates in our records are quoted as negative figures. This is not an error: our Bulgarian, Dutch and Hungarian consolidations are sold with a per-CBM rebate against the base tariff, so a Shanghai–Budapest booking at USD −127 per CBM returns USD 127 per CBM to the shipper. Read the table with that in mind.
How to read these rates: figures are indicative reference levels for port-to-port LCL ocean freight, updated for October 2026. They exclude origin haulage, warehouse and customs charges, destination port charges and any surcharges. Space, cut-off times and rates must be re-confirmed at booking.

Negative rates are rebates. The sea LCL lanes pay a per-CBM rebate off the base tariff rather than adding a charge. Shantou is the most generous at USD 136 per CBM for shipments up to 3 CBM, tapering to USD 129 between 5 and 15 CBM. Confirm the mechanism in writing before you quote your customer.
Rail is direct. Both the Shenzhen and Xi'an services run as block trains straight into Budapest with no transhipment, and Xi'an is broadly comparable in cost to Shenzhen despite being inland. Transit is typically around two to three weeks, well inside the sea routing.
Ningbo is the outlier. Alone among the sea lanes it routes via Koper and shows only a USD 9 rebate, so it is the least attractive of the three Chinese origins for Hungary.
Rail or sea?
The rail service exists precisely because sea LCL to a landlocked country is slow. Sea takes 27–35 days to Budapest plus clearance; a direct block train covers the same ground in a fraction of the time. If your shipment is time-sensitive, or if you are replenishing a sales season, rail is the better instrument even where the headline per-CBM figure is higher.
Understanding the rebate structure
A rebate booking works like this: the carrier's published tariff applies, and we return the stated amount per cubic metre to you. For a 3 CBM Shantou consignment that is 3 × USD 136 = USD 408 returned. Rebates are settled against the base tariff and are subject to space; they are not a standalone payment, so always ask for the net figure before you commit.
