when use DHL FedEx UPS express from China to USA, how to correctly fill out MID number in commmercial invoice

On February 1, 2025, the US government issued an executive order announcing an additional 10% tariff on all goods from China (including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region). The new regulation takes effect on February 4, 2025. All goods from China (including Hong Kong) to the US will no longer enjoy the under $800 tariff exemption policy and will be subject to a 10% tariff increase on the original tax rate (the final tariff rate for various products ranges from 10% to 60% or more).
New Regulations Require

  • Declaration Requirements: From now on, all non-document goods destined for the United States must be cleared through US formal customs declaration procedures. The invoice must provide cargo information in English, including material, use, and US HS code (which can be found online).
  • MID Number: For goods with a declared value exceeding $250, the sender must fill in the MID (Manufacturer Identification) in the manufacturer column. See below for the generation rules of the MID number.
  • HS Code: The correctness of the HS code directly affects the increase in US tariffs (10%-60%).

Customer Notice

  • Accurate Declaration: When shipping, customers must truthfully and accurately declare the product name, customs code (HS Code), and declared value. The sender shall bear all consequences and expenses arising from customs detention, delay, confiscation, supplementary tax payment, and additional fines caused by the US Customs reassessment.
  • Indefinite Supplementary Collection: Affected by this policy, our company will conduct an indefinite supplementary collection of US import tax fees from you. Once your company delivers the goods, it is deemed to have agreed to the above terms and shall not have any dispute.

MID Code (Manufacturer Identification Code) Generation Rules
The MID code is mainly used for US customs declaration and is an alternative code for the full name and address of the manufacturer, shipper, or exporter. The following are the generation rules for the MID code:

  1. Country Code:

Use the two-letter ISO code of the supplier's country. For example:

    • GB: United Kingdom
    • NL: Netherlands
    • DE: Germany
    • US: United States
    • CN: China
  1. Company Name:

Take the first three letters of the first two "words" in the company name. For example:

    • ABC Company → ABC
    • L.S. Ayres Company → LSA
    • XYZ International → XYZ

If there is no obvious word separation in the company name, take the first six letters.

  1. Address Number:

Extract the largest number from the address line, up to four digits. For example:

    • 236 Wendell Ford Blvd → 236
    • 1234 Main Street → 1234
    • 49 250th St → 49
  1. City Name:

Take the first three letters of the city name. For example:

    • St. Louis → STL
    • London → LON
    • Erlanger → ERL

Example
Assuming a manufacturer has the following details:

  • Company Name: ABC Company
  • Address: 236 Wendell Ford Blvd, Ste 1304
  • City: Erlanger
  • Country: United States

The generation process of its MID Code is as follows:

  • Country Code: US
  • Company Name: ABC
  • Address Number: 236
  • City Name: ERL

The final generated MID Code is: USABC236ERL.
Precautions

  • The MID Code must be accurately generated according to the above rules, otherwise, the customs documents may be returned.
  • For some special cases (such as Canada), provincial codes may need to be used.
  • If the address contains multiple numbers, the largest number should be selected.
