Air Cargo Length Limit: How Long Can a Piece Fly?

The 318 cm threshold that defines lengthy cargo, the practical 6 m and 12 m boarding envelopes, and every extra charge a long piece can attract.

What counts as lengthy cargo?

In international air freight, any piece longer than 318 cm is defined as lengthy cargo. A crate that long no longer fits inside a standard unit load device; it has to be loaded directly on the aircraft pallet, and one piece can occupy more than a single pallet position.

The theoretical maximum length

The absolute ceiling is the interior length of the whole aircraft — roughly 70 meters for a stretched freighter. In practice the rules are much simpler:

• Up to 318 cm — standard cargo. No worries, no airline pre-check needed, whether you ship cartons, wooden cases or pallets.
• Above 318 cm — confirm with the airline or its agent before you commit.

How to confirm a long piece can fly

Small and mid-size shippers should work through a professional air freight agent and hand over five elements: accurate photos of the packed cargo, its length, its weight, the airport of departure and the airport of destination. Every element matters — leave one out and the airline or agent cannot say whether the piece boards.

Understanding who owns the space also helps. Airlines sell the year's capacity pallet block by pallet block to international forwarders; the airline itself rarely faces shippers directly, because air freight involves far more than the flying — and the airline has no time to run your formalities. For a lengthy piece, your agent must also be able to coordinate with other block holders to buy spare pallet positions. If the neighbors will not sell, the cargo cannot fly — even when it would physically fit.

What lengthy cargo costs

In the low season, the quoted unit price is per kilogram plus a base-plate (skid) charge. Because two pallets leave a gap, the airline builds the load on a proprietary plank to secure and lash the cargo — and the weight and volumetric weight of that extra plank are billed to the shipper. If you refuse to have other cargo stacked on top of your piece, the airline also bills the empty space above it at the normal volume rate. Expect the all-in cost of lengthy cargo to land well above the regular rate.

Details that make or break a long shipment

• Boarding envelope. Around 6 meters is normally no problem on a freighter. About 12 meters is the practical maximum, and only a handful of airport pairs with Boeing 747 freighters can take it — for example Emirates SkyCargo's Shanghai Pudong – Dubai service accepts 12-meter pieces.
• 10-meter territory. On the great freighter lanes — Shanghai to Los Angeles, Chicago, Liège or London — pieces up to about 10 meters can usually be worked.
• Extra charges. Beyond the weight or volume rate, budget for the plank charge, an overlength charge, difficult-handling fees and forklift charges.
• Ground handling. The airline flies the aircraft; a separate ground handling company loads it. Their equipment and experience decide whether your long piece actually gets up the ramp.
• The coordination chain. Packing that meets airline standards, exact dimensions and weight, a domestic pick-up truck long enough for the crate, warehouse platform hours and forklift capacity, export documents pre-checked — every link has to hold.
