Shantou is USD 5 per CBM cheaper than the other origins — on a typical 5 CBM shipment that is USD 25 saved for the same Rotterdam routing.
Ningbo's transit window is quoted at 60–90 days because the Rotterdam feed to West Africa varies with the connecting service; the other origins hold a steadier ~60–65 days.
Why the routing runs through Europe
West-bound Africa loops from Asia are thin, so consolidators load Cameroon boxes into their strong Europe services and tranship at Rotterdam. The routing is dependable but exposes cargo to two extra handling cycles — export packing should be robust, and palletised cargo travels best.
Worked example
Thirteen cartons of rubber gloves ex-Shantou: 1.6 CBM and 1,170 kg. Converted at 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, the weight basis equals 1.17 CBM — less than the actual volume — so freight bills on volume: 300 × 1.6 = USD 480, plus origin charges and the Douala destination bill.
