Direct freighters to Chicago in one day

Three carriers lift Hong Kong freight to O'Hare nonstop: 5Y Atlas Air, CV Cargolux and CX Cathay Pacific. A consignment that departs Hong Kong at 08:00 Beijing time is on the ground in Chicago at roughly 08:00 US Central time the same calendar day — a one-day airport-to-airport transit that no mainland Chinese gateway can match on the Midwest lane.

Polar Air Cargo — the workhorse of the lane

PO Polar Air Cargo operates more than five departures a day on the Hong Kong–USA lane, making it the highest-frequency carrier between the Asia-Pacific and the US East. Its Chicago rotations build through Cincinnati (CVG) and price in the middle of the table, with transit times of one to three days depending on which departure the freight is booked onto.

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul

TK Turkish Airlines Cargo routes Hong Kong freight through Istanbul, where it is consolidated with traffic from China, Japan and Southeast Asia and re-flown to O'Hare. The published transit is three to four days; in our experience the actual airport-to-airport time is closer to two, and TK generally operates all-cargo aircraft, so it can accept large consolidated consignments that passenger carriers cannot.

Emirates via Dubai

EK Emirates SkyCargo takes roughly three days overall. The routing is unusual: the freight is first flown to Dubai World Central (DWC), trucked across to Dubai International (DXB), and flown on to Chicago from there. Two intermediate airports would normally add a week, but Emirates keeps the dwell short and the DWC-to-DXB transfer to re-departure typically takes only one day.

How Hong Kong pricing works

Below 100 kg only CX Cathay Pacific and EK Emirates offer a service; the other carriers on the lane will not accept a consignment under 100 kg. Between 100 kg and 300 kg, Polar Air Cargo has historically been the cheapest carrier at around 25.8 CNY per kg, while Turkish Airlines has been the most expensive at around 43 CNY per kg — a gap of more than 17 CNY per kilogram, far wider than the spread you normally see between carriers on the same lane. That gap is a negotiating opportunity: ask your forwarder to request a better rate from the carrier's agent before you book, because the published level is rarely the final one.

Most China–USA air consignments weigh more than 300 kg. Below that threshold the total air freight cost frequently exceeds the price of a FedEx express shipment from China, which is why the sub-100 kg and sub-300 kg brackets are much thinner markets than the mainstream weight breaks.

Hong Kong has a very large community of air freight forwarders. Most are agents for a particular airline in the local market; a meaningful number keep their operating office in Shenzhen so they can collect freight across mainland China, consolidate it, and truck it to Hong Kong for uplift.
