UPS Airlines — a different product from UPS express

Shenzhen Baoan is a strategically important Chinese station for UPS Airlines, which is not the same business as UPS Worldwide Express. Alongside the volume it flies for its own courier network, UPS Airlines sells a meaningful share of each departure as airport-to-airport freight capacity to the open market.

That matters for shippers in Shenzhen and the surrounding cities of Heyuan, Dongguan, Huizhou and Shanwei: if you specifically want UPS aircraft, an airport-to-airport booking is available through a forwarder at freight rates rather than courier rates. Make sure the booking specifies the airline product — the two are different companies selling different international air services.

Shenzhen versus Guangzhou on price

On the same carrier and the same weight break, Shenzhen departures to O'Hare frequently price below Guangzhou. The clearest example from the tariff history above is Hainan Airlines above 300 kg: out of Shenzhen the rate has been around 15 CNY per kg against roughly 17.5 CNY out of Guangzhou — a gap of about 2.5 CNY per kilogram, which on a 300 kg consignment is a saving of roughly CNY 750 on the air freight alone.

Fastest and slowest routings out of Shenzhen

The fastest connection to O'Hare is MF XiamenAir, which uplifts at Shenzhen Baoan, transits Seattle by aircraft (not by truck) and lands in Chicago in about two days. OZ Asiana and CI China Airlines (Taiwan, China) also fly both sectors with aircraft, but each dwells a day at its own home hub, so the total journey is two to three days.

At the other end of the scale, Hainan Airlines builds the rotation through several intermediate airports and can take close to ten days from departure to arrival. Clients who assume air freight arrives next day are often startled by that figure, and it is a genuine commercial risk: for exhibition freight or other time-definite cargo, a slightly higher rate on a carrier with a two-day transit is always the cheaper decision once the cost of a missed event is counted.

The routings, and why they transit

Shenzhen–Chicago routings are broadly similar to Guangzhou–Chicago ones. China's three big carriers — CZ China Southern, CA Air China Cargo and MU China Eastern — almost always transit another Chinese airport before the trans-Pacific sector, and the most common transit points are Shanghai Pudong and Beijing Capital. Transiting lets a carrier consolidate several regional origins onto one long-haul departure: the aircraft only leaves when there is enough freight to fill it, which is what keeps the per-kilo rate affordable.

That consolidation is also why a quiet season can add a day: with less freight in the market, the carrier waits to build a fuller load before departing.
